It's all about roll center change on the pinion side. For a heavy track you can raise the jbar on the pinion side, and it won't get over as hard and will drive better, looser on entry and through the center.
Frame side, is simple. Up on the frame is more side bite, less forward. Down is more forward, less side.
So for a slick track if you go up, you need to make the correct adjustments around it to get your forward back. The way it was explained to me from Bob Pierce is that the jbar will actually try and pull the LR up off the ground, and that's why it loses forward traction when you raise it up on the frame.
