I have a '99 S10 that I just broke off the tailgate handle. I have a cover on the truck that can't open unless I open the tailgate first, so I can't get inside to unscrew anything on the tailgate. Any suggestions on how to open from the outside?

Can you see the rod that runs to each side that used to be connected to the handle? If so just pull them with say a pair of pliers or visegrips toward where the handle was.

Grab a screwdriver and move to the side of the tailgate where it attaches to the truck side via the hinges. Slide the screwdriver into the hinge mechanism and try to manually release the black rubber gasket that holds the tailgate to the truck hinge rod. Push the screwdriver up to release the tailgate.

take your gun out and shoot it a couple times,,, if that doesnt work you call sara palin and ask her what they do in alaska when that happens, and if that still doesnt work you take a torch and cut a hole in it wrap a chain thru it and drive off,, somethin s gotta give.

And if your an "O" type Democrat you just sell it for cash for clunkers and let material products be wasted and destroyed.

How about removing the tailgate section and putting in a used one?

Plasma cutter and a magnetic bumper sticker!

And quit making fun of my two wheel drive Ranger. Just because you can't use overdrive in a head wind, leaks oil like a sieve and you have to turn off the A/C to go a little faster is no reason to berate my junk!

Thanks, Ralph

It's okay. You're not the only one that thinks they're junk. I had to send two of my mechanics to Louisville KY for service school back in about 2000. They came back just a bitching about my "no power ranger". I laughed it off until the next year when I had to send them to service school again. They DEMANDED a rental vehicle. I still love my junk!

How about removing the custom tailgates for pickup (http://www.stylintrucks.com/category/replacement/tailgates_-and-_components.aspx) section and putting in a used one?

Bump. What do you mean? Just removed the tailgates and replace it with a used what? I am sorry but I don't get what you are trying to say. Having some problems with my tailgate too right now.

An Electrified SAWZALL run down the CRACK between the tailgate & bed side panel will dom the trick.

Come on guys, He asked for help, not a ration of B/S.

I don't have one in front of me right now, but the remains of the handle is fastened to the tail gate with rivets or bolts. grind these off and drill to allow the handle to be pulled out some. then if rods are connected just turn whole assembly to release the side latches. If this does not work remove rods from handle, being careful not to loose them ends in the bottom of the tailgate and pull them to the center with vice grips on each. If they don't want to move, which is usually the case when handle breaks off, squirt them from the inside with a good rust penetratent and flexible tube that comes with it and try again in a half hour. If they are really rusty, you may have to hit them vice grips with a hammer to free them up. Hope this helps you out.
