CARTERSVILLE, GA – The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series has made an adjustment to its Regional points system in an effort to create more eligibility for weekly dirt late drivers to compete for the $5,000 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Regional Championships in 2011 and increase participation at their weekly tracks.

A driver will now record their best 14 weekly point totals to count towards their seasonal total for Regional points. A driver can compete in multiple events each week, but only their highest point total for that week will count in their Regional point totals. The 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series season will be a 27-week period from April 1 through October 2.

In the past, a driver would claim their best 16 finishes during the season. The change to record the highest point total each week and lower the total to the best 14 was done for two reasons according to series officials.

“Under the old points system, a few drivers were in a position to race two and sometimes three times a week, and history showed the drivers that raced the most were usually the ones in contention for the Regional Championships,” NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Director Roby Helm said. “There were drivers that could race only one night a week that did not have an equal chance to compete for the Regional Championships. Because of that and rainouts, those drivers either could not, or just barely hit the 16-race mark.”

Helm said the new Regional points system closes that gap and gives drivers that compete at just one track and equal opportunity to compete for the Regional Championship with the driver that chooses to compete at two or more different tracks during the season.

Once a driver reaches the 14-race mark in their Regional point total, that driver will then begin to net points by replacing the lowest weekly point total with a higher one.

Another adjustment involves lowering the total number of Regional Bonus Points a driver can earn from 150 to 100. Regional bonus points can be earned two different ways and the Regional bonus points will be added to the driver’s best 14 weekly point totals.

A driver can compete in any NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring event during the Weekly Racing Series season and earn 25 bonus points at each event up to 100 points, and/or they can earn 25 bonus points for each four consecutive nights of competition at one Weekly Racing Series-sanctioned track up to 100 points.

The 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series will feature a West Region and an East Region with each Regional Champion winning $5,000. The point fund in each Region will pay back ten spots in 2011, an increase from the top three that were previously paid out of the point fund. Drivers at each sanctioned track will also compete for a track point fund.

Drivers can pre-register for their 2011 Memberships by printing out the Registration Form and following the instructions on the Registration Page of the NeSmith Racing web site at www.nesmithracing.com. The NeSmith Racing Membership is good for both the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring and Weekly Racing Series competition.

“We’re still putting together the Regional line-up of tracks for 2011,” Helm said. “All of our sanctioned tracks that finished the 2010 season are returning for 2011, and we’re adding tracks to that for this season. Tracks that are interested in sanctioning should give us a call at 865-207-4157, or drivers wanting to run for two point funds at tracks that are not sanctioned should encourage the track operator to give us a call.”
