A freeze plug? or an oil gallery plug?

that would be the drain plug, the freeze plugs, or core plugs are the round pucks that are just driven in. (smooth). I take it it's the allen head style of plug, and not the 9/16 hex? I would try to drill the hole alittle deeper, heat the area around the plug, then try to easy out it while still hot. I found the snap-on bolt extractors to work very well, just don't get them very hot. Designed to soften when heated to cherry incase you break one off, you can still drill it out. I wouldn't be afraid of the small amount of metal shavings that might go into the coolant area if you had to drill clear through, should be able to flush it out or maybe blow it out through the water pump passage. Good luck.

metal in water doesnt matter.

just drill it out to 1/8 pipe and tap it and put in a 1/8 brass plug.

If your really want to remove it drill it and stick any extractor you want in there then heat around it with a torch and touch a candle to it.... it will screw right out easily.

another option is to weld a bolt to the plug and turn it out. the weld wont stick to the cast iron block just the metal plug (assuming its a steel plug).

The candle trick works great. That is how I remove all taper threaded plugs.

The heat pulls the liquid wax down onto the threads of the fastener acting as a penetrating lubricant.

Left handed twist drill bits (reverse rotation) work well also
