Henderson Motorsports Caps Strong East Bay Performance

Laurel, Mississippi (02/16/11) – Henderson Motorsports made a strong showing at the 35th Annual DART Winternationals at East Bay Raceway (Gibsonton, Florida) as David Breazeale qualified for all six features and recorded several strong finishes.

Below is a blog-style recap of the events:

February 8th, 2011 - After seeing the opener fall victim to rain on Monday, Henderson Motorsports finally opened the 2011 Florida Speedweeks on Tuesday night at East Bay Raceway Park (Tampa, Florida). With 64 Super Late Models entered, Leon Henderson would see his night come to an end before it could get started as contact with the turn two wall resulted in too much damage for the team to get fixed prior to to qualifying.

David Breazeale would enjoy much better luck though. He started the night by qualifying fifth fastest in his group to earn the outside front row starting spot for his heat race, which he won over Jason Feger to earn the third starting spot in the 30 lap, $5,000 to win feature. Early in the feature, Breazeale would jump to the second position as he began to pressure Jimmy Owens for the lead. Lap 9 saw Breazeale slip back to third as Scott Bloomquist moved up to second. Over the next 15 laps, Breazeale ran in third as he challenged for the second spot. However, on a lap 27 restart Austin Hubbard slipped past David for the third spot. Breazeale would go on to record a strong fourth place finish behind race winner, Bloomquist, Owens, and Hubbard.

Leon Henderson found himself starting deep in the grid for heat race action, and after not qualifying for the feature via heat race action, he was forced to run a b-main. In the b-main, Henderson would get valuable track time but would not reach a transfer spot to the main event.

February 9th, 2011 - Henderson Motorsports entered another $5,000 to win event at East Bay Raceway (Tampa, FL) on Wednesday night. For David Breazeale the night started well as he rocketed to a second place finish in his heat race to lock into the seventh starting spot for the 30 lap main event. David battled in the top ten for much of the event, but late in the race, David would spin to miss a melee in front of him. By series' rules Breazeale should've gotten his spot back as he spun to miss an accident, but he did not get to retain his position. He would ultimately finish 18th.

February 12th, 2011 - Henderson Motorsports entered the final day of the 35th Annual DART Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park. Fifty-eight Super Late Models entered the morning session, which was highlighted by a $10,000 to win, 40 lap event. For Leon Henderson, he would see his day quickly end as in heat race action, a car spun in front of him, which sent him hard into the turn one wall, resulting in heavy damage to his car. The damage forced Henderson to scratch from the balance of the day's program.

David Breazeale would enjoy another pair of strong runs. In the morning session, David started on the front row for his heat race and led much of the event before Jimmy Owens slipped by on the last lap to claim the win. After finishing second in his heat race, Breazeale started eighth in the feature. He would battle a tight race car for much of the feature before settling into an eighth place finish.

In the night program, the SPEED TV cameras were present to catch all of the action in the $12,000 to win, 75 lap event. Sixty-one Late Models were on hand, and the event started well for Breazeale as he set second fast time in his group to earn the pole for a heat race. In heat race action, Breazeale finished in the second spot, which earned him the 10th starting spot for the feature. For the first half of the race David ran in the top ten before slipping to a 15th place finish late in the event.

February 11th, 2011 - The team saw Thursday's event postponed by rain at East Bay Raceway Park (Tampa, Florida), and as a result a double header was contested on Friday. The morning show was headlined by a $5,000 to win event, and David's afternoon started well as he set fourth fast time in his group to earn the outside front row starting spot for his heat race. Unfortunately in turn two on the first lap, Breazeale would jump the cushion and tag the wall. The damage would be enough to force him pitside. Luckily David would receive a provisional starting spot for the feature via his qualifying effort. After starting 26th on the grid for the feature, Breazeale retired on the first lap to save his equipment on a track that did not lend itself to passing.

In the evening, $10,000 to win show Breazeale would find himself starting fifth in his heat race. Despite being behind the eight ball he would race his way to the third and final transfer spot, which left him starting thirteenth in the 50 lap feature. In the feature, on a one groove track, Breazeale would only manage a 14th place finish in the final rundown.

Overall, the DART Winternationals were a success for the team as David qualified for all six features in only his second appearance at East Bay Raceway.

The team will take off the upcoming weekend before returning to action on February 25th-26th at Ark-La-Tex Speedway with the 1st Annual Pelican 100. The event will pay $10,000 to win/$800 to start, and will see time trials and heat races contested on Friday with b-mains and the main event on Saturday.
