CARTERSVILLE, GA – After the first three events of the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series season last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL, several statistical categories have started to take shape, including the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award, and the Hedman Husler of the Year Award.

A total of 47 drivers representing 12 states and one province of Canada participated in the three East Bay Raceway Park races. There were 19 drivers from Florida; ten drivers from Mississippi; three drivers each from Georgia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia; two drivers from North Carolina; and one driver each from Tennessee, New York, Kentucky, Virginia, Alabama, and Illinois. There was one driver from Ontario Canada.

Out of the 47 entrants, 33 drivers qualified for at least one main event, and 13 drivers made the main event all three nights. There were eight drivers that completed all 130 laps of main event competition. There were three different winners, Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, WV, Jack Nosbisch Jr. of Riverview, FL, and Phillip Cobb of Apollo Beach, FL.

Drivers that completed all 130 laps of main event competition were Jack Nosbisch Jr., Keith Nosbisch of Valrico, FL, two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion David Earl Gentry of Lewisburg, TN, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA, 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Champion Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA, defending and two-time series Champion Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS, Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC, and Cobb.

Seven drivers declared their intentions on competing for the $5,000 2011 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award. Three of those drivers qualified for at least one main event. Frank Wilson of Harold, FL and Mark Tice of Avon, MS made two of the three main events, and Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL qualified for one event.

Edge, the 17-year-old 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region Champion, had the best showing, as he was the Fast Qualifier on Thursday night and finished sixth in the 40-lap main event.

Wilson leads the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year standings with 172 points, followed by Tice with 160 points, and Edge with 148 points. Tootie Arnold of Bude, MS, Josh Pea(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) of Dover, FL, Jake Knight of Georgetown, MS, and Tony Lawson of Laurel, MS each has 90 points. The top Rookie driver in the point standings at the end of the season will receive $5,000 from VP Racing Fuels.

Arnold impressed many with his performance off the track. Arnold had engine problems on Thursday, but ordered a new GM Performance 604 Crate Engine from NeSmith Chevrolet on Friday morning. The engine arrived from Claxton, GA at East Bay Raceway Park at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Arnold and his crew installed the engine and made the grid for his heat race.

Gentry leads the $1,000 Hedman Husler of the Year point standings after the first three races with 17 points. Drivers earn one point for each position they improve from start to the finish of each race. At the end of the season, Hedman Husler Hedders will award $1,000 to the driver with the most points.

Cobb and Turner each have 15 points, the 2010 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Larry Harrod of Plains, GA has 14 points, and Jon Over of Uniontown, PA has 13 points. Over, Cobb and Turner were the Hedman Husler Award winners respectively on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Hedman Husler Hedders awards $100 to the driver that improves his position the most from the start of the race to the end of the race in each NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series event during the 2011 season.

Rocket Chassis of Shinnston, WV leads the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge standings after the first three races with 30 points. Jack Nosbisch Jr. drove a Rocket Chassis to a victory on Friday night. J. Nosbisch had a second-place finish on Thursday night, and K. Nosbisch had three third-place finishes in a Rocket Chassis.

Two-time Chassis Manufacturers Champion Warrior Race Cars built by Goddard Performance of Knoxville, TN is second in the Chassis Manufacturers Challenge standings with 28 points. Warrior Race Cars had a win and a fast time with Horton on Thursday night.

TNT Race Cars of Piney Flats, TN is third with 26 points followed by the defending NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge Champion Trak-Star Race Cars built by Boland Performance of Cuba, AL with 20 points, GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier, AR with 19 points, and Stinger Race Cars built by J.T. Kerr Racing Equipment of Rockford, TN with three points.

Horton led the main event in all three races for a total of 84 laps led. Horton led the final 21 laps on Thursday night on his way to the win. Horton led the first 23 laps of the Friday night feature race before cutting down a right-front tire, and he led the first 40 laps of the Saturday night main event before suffering a mechanical problem.

Bryan Bernhardt of Clearwater, FL led the first 19 laps of the Thursday night main event, while J. Nosbisch led the final 17 laps on Friday night, and Cobb led the final ten laps of the Saturday night feature race.

There were also three different fast qualifiers in the first three NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series events of the 2011 season. In addition to the fast time honors by Horton on Thursday night and Edge on Friday night, Brindle was the fast qualifier on Saturday night.
