AMRA Clarifies Rules

The American Motor Racing Association
AMRA-"Time proven-Making Racing Affordable !"

MT. ALTO, WV- The American Motor Racing Association (AMRA) met Saturday afternoon for a Technical Inspector's training session at the shop of competitor Robbie Evans in Mineral Wells, West Virginia. Fifteen participants attended the meeting to clarify existing rules and amend a couple other areas of concern.
"Although we would have liked to have had 100 percent attendance, we had a great turnout," said AMRA president Larry Keefer. "We want the racers to know that the AMRA wants to continue the premise of what this organization was founded on-- maintaining a level playing field for all. The organization is working hard to see that this happens, and if we keep the cars on equal terms, then racing can be more affordable and also more competitive. Much was accomplished today and the training session was a success."
"The more exotic that cars become, or we allow them to become, the more costly it is to race," said Director of Racing Operations Scott Wolfe. "Everyone wants to win. Everyone wants a fancy, wild looking car. But there is a price to pay for all of that. Fewer cars, less competition, and thus fewer fans in the stands."
"For example, Indy thrived up to the late '70's, then technology and rear-engined cars came about. It cost owners too much too keep up with technology and fields faltered. Wedge cars in the LM series got out of hand. If Weekend Warriors are to survive, we have to play by the rules. Just yesterday, the Lucas Oil Late Models clarified their interior decking rule. Simple is generally more practical and less expensive."
"We have to keep the cars simple and make it possible for new blood to afford racing and come into the sport. We also have to keep our current drivers on the track."
The points of emphasis discussed for the modifieds were
--Safety
--Flat roofs
--Flat nose panels
--Interior Decking
--Body width
--Legal tires
--Wheel Width
--Overall Body dimensions
--Sail Panels and Spoilers
--Weight breaks for Crate Engines/Steel Body Shocks
A rules addendum will be posted at the end of this release.

Said Keefer, "Our border tracks have cars that run UMP. We want to keep the rules close to UMP, yet have our own identity. Safety is our number one concern, keeping cars within limits, and keeping competition equal for all. If a car is fully legal under UMP, strap on a 5" spoiler and in most cases it is AMRA legal. Our rules are close."
Technical inspectors were trained in how to measure body panels, so that all will be conducting Tech in the same fashion. K-C Raceway Tech inspector Mike Shell conducted much of the training.
Noted Shell, "Just because you as a racer didn't get caught one week, doesn't make it right if you get caught the next week. How many times do you have to run a stop sign before you get caught? Just because you never got caught running the stop sign, doesn't mean its ok when you do get caught."
Wolfe added, "Flat means flat. It is simple to build and simple to enforce. Without going with a NASCAR style template or "bow-meter", the roof issue would be difficult to enforce. We have given the racers a bit of a tolerance, because 'racing' will in itself cause the material to flex. We don't want to do templates and we don't want to have to distinguish between a 2" bow versus a 4" bow."
Shell also noted, "When the drivers know the rules, there usually aren't many problems. Generally, guys want to win fair and square, and want to do what is right. It is important for the drivers to know the rules and to understand them. The best tech any track has is a driver that builds his car to what the rules say."
The AMRA hopes to have consistent tech from track to track in 2011. "We are going to try to be perfect," said Keefer. "We know that we won't be (perfect), but we want participants and our track operators to know we are giving this a good shot."
Plans call for a roving technical inspector to visit all AMRA tracks. At this time a couple candidates are interested in the job.
"We have a couple people interested in helping us get out to all of the tracks. These personalities should bring a wealth of experience to the AMRA. We have some well-respected names that we hope will sign on," said Keefer.
"Our first goal of 2011 is to rejuvenate our competitive and time-proven modified series. Then down the road we want to expand our Late Model series." said Wolfe.
Safety, Body dimensions, spoiler heights, engine set back, wheel base, and aerodynamic concerns were points of emphasis on the late models. AMRA Late Model rules are in alignment with most national sanctioning bodies.
Some concerns of the AMRA are that some car builders are pushing and exceeding the limits. Another concern is the rising cost of putting a competitive race car on the track. Drivers and car owners are asked to submit cost-saving ideas to the AMRA by contacting Scott Wolfe at << swolfe1490@suddenlink.net >>
All drivers and owners are also asked to sign up for e-mail on the AMRA website or send an e-mail to Scott Wolfe at the above address.
Drivers were also urged to take advantage of the AMRA License discount which ends March 15. An AMRA License will be available at 2010 prices ($60) until March 15. After that prices will increase to $75. All license money goes into the AMRA point fund for each division. Nearly, $60,000 in prize money was distributed to drivers in 2010.

2011 AMRA Modified Rule Amendments/Clarifications

In clarifying roof shape, all roofs must be Flat. Flat will be defined as equilaterally flat from left to right with a 1/2 inch tolerance from the outermost point of each side. There will be no bowed or dished roofs.

All roofs must have less-than or equal to a 2" variation of tolerance from front to back with a convex or completely flat shape. The 2" of tolerance will be measured from the midpoint to the front, and from the midpoint to the back of the roof. (This allows for older-style fiberglass roofs or self-made aluminum roofs made to the fiberglass specs where the apex/highest point of the roof is the center)

Interior decking must be flat from left to right, level with the doors with a 1" dip/sag tolerance at the midpoint of the interior left to right/door to door; or at one any point between the two door panels.

Body panels must not have more than a 1/2 inch lip (wheel wells, hood scoop, etc), unless otherwise stated, such as in spoiler geometry. Body panels must be mounted flush to adjacent panels as indicated in other sections of the rules. No Wickerbills.

Nose panels may be no larger than 45" wide left to right at any given point. All nose panels should be flat from left to right.

Bodies may be no wider than 74" at the widest point. Bodies should be 68" wide at top and bottom of doors except for kick-out. The "widest point" will be defined as the point directly in front of the left rear wheel where the 6" kickout is allowed on the driver¿½¬¢s side (driver's side only) A 74" gauge will be slid under the car to tech this area of the body. Body panels, including wheel-well lips, must fit between the 74" uprights.

Bodies may extend above the roll cage if they legally fit within the height requirements. The AMRA recommends that all bodies be flush with the roll cage as much as possible. Driver's head must not extend beyond the top of the roll cage.

In 2011 Crate Engines will receive a 100 pound weight break at the scales and must have a certified tag. GM-604 and 602 Crate Engines. No counterfeit bolts or seals.

In 2012 drivers utilizing steel welded bearing shocks will be given a 50 pound weight break.
