take the inspection plug out and count the teeth on the ring gear.you'll need to take a paint marker and mark a tooth to help keep track. the ring gears have different numbers of teeth so you should be able to look in ther catalog or better yet call the tech line. but you could pull the side bell and count both the ring and pinion gears divide the ring gear by the pinion gear.

Chances are it's either a 4.11 or a 4.86. Spin one of the hubs three complete rotations and have somebody count the number or complete rotations of the pinion shaft. If it's about 12 and 1/3 turns, you've got a 4.11. If it's almost 15 turns, you've got a 4.86.

That's why I said count the rotations of the PINION shaft, not the through shaft. The pinion shaft will spin without a qc gear in it.
I think that's just the easiest way to do it unless you are taking it apart.

just put a KNOWN gear set in it...like a 6.14 or whatever you have..if its a 6.14 when figured for a 4.11.....then turn a wheel one full round and count the rotations of the pinion..if one round of the wheel equals 6 rounds plus .14 round then its a 4.11.
