After a runner up finish at Modoc Speedway in the FASTRAK SE Tour season opener, Brandon Umberger maneuvered around early race leader Jensen Ford and secured the $2000 victory in the FASTRAK main event last night at Volunteer Speedway. Umberger, who has had success at the high banked Tennessee track, now leads the SE Touring points after two events and has surely established himself as a lead contender for the 2011 touring championship.

Jensen Ford set fast time in Shell Racing Solutions time trials and was joined on the front row by Vic Chandler. Umberger, Dale Ball, and defending SE champion David Smith rounded out the top five in qualifying setting the stage for the 40 lap feature event. Ford jumped to the lead from the outset followed by Umberger as Chandler, Ball, and Smith were trying to keep the field at bay and remain in the top five. Umberger wasted no time in challenging Ford for the lead as other drivers were making a charge towards the front of the field. Ford held off Umberger’s initial challenges as Shanon Buckingham began making his move through the field from his 12th starting position. Umberger moved up to the outside groove and used his momentum off of turn 2 to overtake Ford for the lead. Meanwhile Buckingham’s pursuit was relentless as he broke into the top 3 late in the event and would eventually surpass Ford for the 2nd position. However, Umberger remained steady and calm as he was not to be denied. Umberger claimed the victory over Buckingham as Ford, Bobby Mays, and Dale Ball rounded out the top 5 finishers.

After two touring events, Umberger leads Buckingham by four points in the championship standings. With the teams having the luxury of two drop races for the 2011 SE Tour, the plot has only thickened as many teams look towards the Triple Crown races on Memorial Day weekend as their chance to climb back into contention.
