Bird Flies to TSMA Modified Win

(Middlebourne, W.V. 5-22-11) For only the third time this year, Mother Nature allowed Tyler County to get their program in. The Bridgeport Equipment & Tool TSMA Modifieds were highlighted with the Mod Mayhem 25. After Mike “Bird” Wilson, and Steve Higgins took prelim honors, the race took two tries to get started. Wilson shot to the lead with Brent Trimble, Mark (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son, Higgins and Del Cunningham filling the top five. A quick caution on lap two for a multi car pileup in turn two stopped action. Wilson, (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son, Trimble, Higgins and Cunningham were now the top five order. The race stayed green with Wilson stretching his lead until lap 10 when P J Durrah looped his mount in turn four, just as Brian Rush stopped in turn two bellowing smoke. On the restart third running Trimble got around in turn one bringing the caution back out. The remainder of the 25 lapper was yellow free as Wilson claimed the $800 check. Coming across the stripe in second was a engine ailing (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son, Cunningham, Tommy Powell, and Trimble.

In the “Believe It Or Not” portion of the night, the Dodd’s Sporting Goods Late Model began with Billy Brown and Ricky Conley winning the heats. The feature began with Conley up front with Brown, Greg Baumberger, Tyler Carpenter and Mike Benedum in tow. On lap nine with Conley still leading, Carpenter motored to second. Then on lap 11 Conley drove hard into turn three and made contact with James Watson, it also collected Carpenter. Conley was credited with the yellow giving Carpenter the front slot. Carpenter, Brown, Baumberger, Benedum and Butch McGill (from tenth) were now the top five. The circuits clicked off when the caution appeared again on lap 14 for Shane Hitt who spun in turn two. Carpenter, Benedum, Brown, McGill, and Baumberger were one through five. On the restart McGill moved to third, the race was stopped again on lap 16. Racing resumed but only for two go rounds when Carpenter pulled up in turn four with a flat right rear tire. That handed the lead to Benedum. With Benedum on the point, as he exited turn two something broke in the left rear stopping him immediately. McGill now inherited the front spot. The ‘Doddridge County Terror” held off a late charge from Paul Wilmoth Jr. (who started at the tail) to claim the victory. The Jenkins Ford / KFC sponsored self owned #1MC bested P. Wilmoth, Baumberger, Steve Wilmoth, and Brown. McGill was the fourth leader with no passes for the lead occurring.

After three tries the United Rental FASTRAK crate motor Late Models counted a green flag lap. Derek Doll jumped to the front and never looked back. The Cell Accessories / Perkins Supply machine was not seriously challenged as he made his first trip to victory lane this season. Daniel Hill, Kyle Thomas, John Watson and Danny Thomas completed the top five.

In the final event of the night, the Sigler Fabrication Hot Mods saw Kenny Isner hold off a determined Devin Verardi to capture his second checkerboard of the year. Mike Lauer crossed in third, Bill Sigmon and Mike Conkle were fourth and fifth. The race ended abruptly when Lindsey Smarr and Donnie Dotsonm III got together on the back straight and both cars breifly became airbourne and ripped out a huge section of guardrail. Both drivers were ok. Isner sports Mike’s Auto Body and Norris Tire as his top sponsors.

In the Herrington – Yoak Pre Owned Auto Mod Lite’s Mitch Herrick snagged the early lead and was able to withstand heavy pressure from Mitch Ward late to receive his first checkerboard in quite a while. Herrick parked the Bob Butcher owned Valley Tire #B4 in victory lane as he bested Ward, James Watson, Kacy Campbell, and Zach Watson.

The Champion Sport Cards and Trophies Eco Flyer 4 cylinders may have been the most competitive race, it was the most controversial as well. Donnie Wamsley in the Easy East Gate Used Cars / Barbie’s Day Care #00 easily drove away for the win but second place was highly contested with no less than four cars vying for the spot. When the dust cleared Josh Fulks, Bill Doll, Justin Freeland, and Zack Jones were second through fifth. David Bunnell crossed in second but was disqualified for rough driving.

The Outlaw Graphics and Automotive Services MWRA Mini Wedges once again started the evening off with great racing. Georgie Tennett collected the first place trophy (sponsored by Travis Thomas racing) ahead of Trey Watson, Jordon Doty, Tiffany Jackson and Alec Frazier.

Next week at the Bullring is Race for Angels. A celebration of the life of drivers and fans who made Tyler County Speedway. Plus the Heavenly Hog Picnic. With regular racing in all classes. Coming in two weeks, the UFo series lands for a second time. The 11th annual King of the Ring for Late Models will pay a cool $4,000 to the winner at the ultra fast ¼.
