STEWART, OHIO- A beautiful summer night and 106 CARS welcomed the start of the 2011 racing season at Billy Jarrell's Skyline Speedway where Wheelersburg, Ohio's Rod Conley picked up the AMRA Late Model win, veteran Danny Smith claimed the 25-lap OVSCA 410 sprint main, Andy Bond claimed the AMRA Modified main, Randy Wise took the Four Cylinders, and Cole Mayle claimed the Mike's Auto Body Mini-Wedges.
Fast Timer and heat winner Harold Redman, Jr. and last year's biggest winner at Skyline, Chris Carpenter, paced the field to the green in the 25 lap AMRA Late Model main. Chris Carpenter took the initial lead and began to pull away from second place K-C Burdette. The race went straight green to lap-eleven when Freddie Carpenter caught the back chute wall to bring out the caution.
In the meantime, Hot Rod Conley had passed Burdette with a hard-charging Jason Montgomery following in tow for third. On the restart Carpenter resumed the lead, but also last year's Harvest 50 winner Zach Dohm jumped Redman on the start and would later be penalized two spots. Dohm went on to outdistance the field, but the miscue would prove to be costly.
At this point the race for second was actually for first. Rod Conley and Carpenter put on quite a show with Conley actually taking the lead on lap 21. Dohm ran under the checkered flag first, however, Conley brought home the $1,500 cash in the Conley Trucking 71R. Said Conley, "The key to the win was Bart Hartman helping me sort this car out all evening long. The changes we made sure made a difference and the car hooked up nice. As far as the win goes, we will take them any way we can get them." Conley also thanked Rocket Chassis, Conley Trucking, and Hoosier Tire by Frye.
Rounding out the top ten were Rod Conley, Chris Carpenter, Zach Dohm, Travis Brookover, Chris Garnes, Jason Montgomery, Harold Redman, Jr., Andy Bond, Tyler Carpenter, Ralph Withem, and Larry Bond. The hard-charger was Tyler Carpenter in a 17th to 8th place run.
The Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association A-main went green to checker with Jimmy Nier jumping out to the early lead. Nier seemed invincible, but slowly the old veteran Danny Smith kept reeling him in. Finally on lap 12 Smith drove under Nier in turn one and zoomed to the win.
Andre Layfield battled Smith hard earlier, when Nier was on the point, but when Smith went to the top spot Layfield was left to battle hard with Wayne McPeek. McPeek and Layfield exchanged positions several times in the middle ten laps before McPeek's tires went away.
Said Smith in victory lane, "The key tonight was being patient and getting to the bottom. I got about as low as I could and the car worked well there. Thanks to the fans for letting us put on a show and coming out and supporting us. Also, thanks to the track and fans for passing the hat last year when I broke my back. It was well appreciated and gave us incentive to come back and put on a good show here tonight." Smith also thanked his crew and sponsors for making the win possible.
Rounding out the top ten behind Danny Smith were Jimmy Nier, Andre Layfield, Wayne McPeek, Dave (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son, Aaron Higgins, Mark Imler, Josh Davis, Keith Baxter, Bryce (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son, and Nathan Skaggs. The sprint hard-charger was Josh Davis up from 15th to 8th.
In the war ridden AMRA modified main, Andy Bond leaped into first and saw Kenny Johnson distantly in his mirror as he blitzed to a big lead and on to the big win.
Much action took place back in the pack, where numerous battles for position and sometimes 3-wide racing from the open wheelers thrilled the crowd. The top ten were Andy Bond, Kenny Johnson, Derrick Smith, Robbie Evans, Bart Hartman, J.P. Roberts, Robert Garnes, Jess Hartman, Mike McPherson, and Jeremy Jarvis. Smith and Bart Hartman had good runs, while the hard-charger was Robbie Evans up from 15th to 4th.
Randy Wise and Tommy Adkins the top winners from last year again battled it out for bragging rights in the Front Wheel drive Four Cylinders. Adkins and Wise trade paint several times, but Wise was able to slide by for the win.
The top ten were Randy Wise, Tommy Adkins, Dennis Adkins, George Klintworth, Tony Plaugher, Ken Young, Jeff Rankin, Barry Kitts, Steve Brown, and John Rankin.
Young Cole Mayle looked like a pro in the Mike's Auto Body Mini-Wedges. Mayle claimed the win in a big way over Martin Gibson Jr., Corey DeLancey, MacKenzie Perine, Samantha Roush, Kasey Rankin, Troy Collins, Coleton Perine, Jake Ice, and Zack Carr. Tony Plaugher was the Four Cylinder hard charger.
Next week, June 10 is the Four Cylinder Gene Adkins Memorial and Regular Show for all other divisions. Gates open at 4:30PM . The Four Cylinder Adkins Memorial will pay $600 to win. June 17 is the Father's Day Special where all Dad's get in for just $10, one of the biggest bargains of the year. The bicycle racing has been moved to July 15. Coming June 24 is the 3rd annual Greg Schilling Memorial for AMRA Modifieds.
