Jon Henry to Drive Coloring Contest Winner’s Car This Weekend

ADA, OH (6/16/11) – Current Sunoco American Late Model Series points leader Jon Henry will have a slightly different look to his familiar #15 when he hits the track this weekend. The car will sport a coloring contest winning design submitted by Lima Middle School fifth-grader Merri Merkel.

Henry recently visited with Lima Middle School students to talk about the science and physics of racing a Dirt Late Model. After speaking with the students, Henry asked them to submit their ideas for a design that would incorporate what they learned from the driver.

“The kids really enjoyed it,” Henry told the Lima News. “It was tough to choose a winner, especially once we narrowed it down to the final five or six. We could tell these students put a lot of time, effort, and creativity into their designs.”

With help from Kurt Wilson of Wide Open Graphics, the two eventually chose Merri Merkel’s design as the winner. Merkel incorporated the words “force”, “velocity”, and “speed” on her design as Henry and Wilson kept the real life race car nearly identical to Merkel’s original blueprint.

“We tried to keep the wrap as close to the original as we possibly could,” Wilson said. “That was important to us because, in the return visit to Lima Middle School, we wanted to make sure all the kids recognized Merri’s design.”

For her efforts, Merkel received several prizes compliments of Jon Henry Racing, Wide Open Graphics, and several other sponsors, including two free suite passes to last weekend’s Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora Speedway from UNOH and one free McFlurry every month for a year from McDonald’s, as well as a t-shirt, a bracelet, and a replica mini-door.

This weekend, Henry will race the Merkel-designed car at the Sunoco American Late Model Series races at Moler Raceway Park just outside of Williamsburg, Ohio on Friday at Oakshade Raceway on Saturday. The car will have a power plant from Mike Lawrence Motorsports under the hood.
