BOYDS SPEEDWAY RESULT 7-1-2011

With the nation celebrating its July 4th birthday it was time for racers and fans alike to celebrate the holiday the old fashion way….”let’s go racing”. After several weeks off due to weather and the Chattanooga’s Riverbend festival it was time to get back to the dirt. After the competitors rolled in the racing surface a little extra to pack in the loads of new clay also brought in during the off weeks, it was time to get down to the weekly heats in each division. With over 90 cars signed in to compete each division would find a full field of cars set to prove who's the best. First out would bring the B-HOBBY’s and a pair of Brooks would take the checkered flags as Ronnie Brooks and Dallas Brooks secure their front row position for the nights feature event. Up next, the CRATE LATE MODELS and a pair of seasoned veterans and multiple feature winners in Jeff Smith and Jason Welshan would take their respected heat victories. The A-HOBBY’s were called to the front stretch and a pair of #37 would secure their front row feature starting position as #37 Chuck Cooper took heat #1 and #37 Blake Armitage would secure his starting position by taking the victory in heat #2. With 27 STEEL-HEADED LATE MODELS signed in track officials chose to split them into three heats for the night’s competition. It became a Georgia clean sweep as Dalton’s Brian Jackson secured the pole starting position with Ringgold’s Jamie Perry taking the second and Ringgold’s Kevin Gibson taking the third. The final heats of the evening saw Jared Blevins and Matt Patton take FWD heat victories.

The night’s first feature brought the B-HOBBY’s to the racing surfaces and a pair of Brooks would bring them to the green. Ronnie Brooks would take the early lead over multiple feature winners and current division point’s leader Dallas Brooks. But on lap 3 Ronnie Brooks would retire his racing machine to the pits with mechanical problems giving the lead to Dallas Brooks. With the field slowed with caution after caution the race would fall under time limits giving the victory to Dallas Brooks. Brooks was followed by Ronnie Kerr, Billy Hogan, Roy Baker and Corey Sanders.

Next up, brought the CRATE LATE MODELS to the front stretch. As the fans looked over the 16 car starting field a pair of seasoned veterans would lead the field to the green. This division has produced some of the best racing anywhere in the south and this week proved to be no different. With both front row starters Jeff Smith and Jason Welshan taking multiple features wins this year. The familiar black and orange 17s lead the field to the green, but a lap 1 caution would end the night early for Tyler Adams with a crash in turn 2. As the field regrouped for the restart Smith would take the early lead with Welshan right on his rear bumper. The two seemed to really take the challenge of the evening proving who was going to be the best. The two raced side by side for laps only to see Smith continue to lead. On lap 17 the two began to catch the slower traffic and began to lap them. Smith seemed to hold off Welshan as they both tried to make the right decision while passing the slower cars. As the two worked the traffic Smith took the white flag with Welshan nipping on his rear bumper. Welshan tried to stick his nose under Smith in turn 1, but Smith closed the door. The two raced down the backstretch for the final time, Smith moved up the track to clear a lapped racer opening the door for Welshan on the bottom. Welshan now had his nose underneath Smith entering turn #3. Welshan continued his drive on the bottom with Smith now side by side less than a car length above him. Welshan would drive off the bottom leading by a nose and would nip Smith at the checkered flag as the fans came to their feet to applaud their efforts. Following Welshan and Smith was Jerry Coffman, Andy Picklesimer and Corey Underdown.

The 19 car A-HOBBY field was up next. A pair of previous winners in #37 Chuck Cooper and #37 Blake Armitage brought the field to the green, but a lap 1 caution for #148 Booger Brooks would line the field up for a restart. Points leader Brooks and pole sitter Chuck Cooper would retire their machine to the pits to try and repair their racing machine. Also retiring their machines to the pits were Greg Greene and Tony Todd all involved in the turn 4 crashes. Cooper would reenter and would restart from the rear of the field. On the restart a third place starter Larry Higgins jumped to the early lead as they raced 4 wide. On lap 3 Blake Armitage started to show his muscle as he motored around Higgins for the lead. Armitage settled down and began to lead the field while Dewayne Wilson set his sights on the rear bumper of Armitage and began his quest to the front. Wilson would stage a fierce battle for the lead but in the end Armitage would revisit victory lane after a lengthy absence. Wilson would take second followed by Chuck Cooper (racing from the rear of the field back to claim third), Larry Higgins and Lee Harbin.

The nights featured event was up next as the STEEL-HEADED LATE MODELS were ready for their 25 lap $1000 to win. With Dalton’s Brian Jackson and Ringgold’s Jamie Perry bringing the field of 26 cars to the green. But it didn’t take long to see that this was going to be a LONG race, as the field had difficulty in just starting the race. On the third attempt to get the race underway Jamie Perry showed the way, but as the cautions continued to slow the field lap after lap. Perry would restart from the lead as Ringgold’s Kevin Gibson had now moved into second with Cleveland’s Lamar Scoggins running third. The cautions would continue to slow the field then on lap 22 as Gibson’s motor let go while running second in turn 1 slowed and tried to get out of the way causing a major crash down the backstretch. Due to curfew rules the race was called at that time as a lengthy cleanup was underway. The caution was called on the #M45 of Kevin Gibson and the field was returned to their previously scored lap. The cars of #16 Rick Hixson and #T21 David Tinker and #T22 Mike Tinker all received heavy damage. A rollback wreaker was called to retrieve the T22 of Mike Tinker as the rear clip had been sheered into. The final finishing order saw Jamie Perry taking the win followed by Lamar Scoggins, Brian Jackson, #R1 Riley Hickman (who started 26th after being unable to make his heat) and John Owneby. The nights racing was called due to the curfew ordinance the track must enforce. The FWD’s will run double features next week with this week’s feature lineup already set.

i think there is a heavy fine for racing past curfew. gotta look at the big picture. breaking curfew is just another way to shut the track.
