CARTERSVILLE, GA – As the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series reaches the beginning of the second half of the 2011 season with Week 15 competition, things will start to get interesting as drivers close in or reach the 14 Week point total mark and their maximum of Regional Bonus Points over the 27-week season that ends on October 2.

NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Week 15 competition will see 12 events at ten tracks in five states. There will be nine races in the West Region and three races in the Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region.

NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region competition began on Monday night with Shay Knight of Columbus, MS winning the first of three Week 15 races at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS driving the DeSoto Honda Special. Magnolia Motor Speedway will also be in action this Friday night, and again on Saturday night with a $1,000-to-win main event.

Friday night will also see NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region action at Batesville Motor Speedway in Batesville, AR, Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS, and Malden Speedway in Malden, MO. Saturday night West Region events are scheduled for Centerville Speedway in Centerville, AR, Drew County Speedway in Monticello, AR and Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS.

Shep Lucas of McKenzie, AL made it three-for-three at Flomaton Speedway in Flomaton, AL in NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region Week 15 action on Monday night with a $1,000 victory driving the Lucas Farms Trak-Star.

There are a pair of the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region Week 15 events scheduled for Saturday night at New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA, and at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.

Drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series earn points based on their highest event point total each week for 14 weeks, plus up to 100 Regional Bonus Points earned by competing in NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring events, and each four weeks of perfect attendance at a NeSmith Chevrolet WRS track.

The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS has been on top of the West Region standings for several weeks. McDuffie has 709 points based on his top weekly point totals in 16 races over 13 weeks of competition. McDuffie also has accumulated 75 Regional Bonus Points.

Justin McRee of Tuscaloosa, AL began his 13th week of competition on Monday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway and moved up to the second spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 666 points that includes 50 bonus points.

Bobby Jordan of McCarley, MS also competed on Monday night at the Mag, and is working his 14th and final week of earning full points. McCarley is third with 665 points that includes 75 Regional Bonus Points. Landon Frith of Terry, MS is fourth with 638 points, but still have two more weeks to earn full points, and he can also earn 25 more Regional Bonus Points.

Randy Boyd of Marion, MS is fifth with 636 points over a 13-week period. Meridian, MS drivers Tim Dees and Daniel Bridgeman have both entered their 14th week of competition tied for the sixth spot with 624 points apiece. Larry Murphy of Meridian, MS is eighth with a 12-week total of 619 points.

Lamar Furr of Hollandale, MS is ninth with a 13-week total of 608 points, and Tony Lawson of Laurel, MS rounds out the top ten in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region standings after Monday night’s race with 596 points over 12 weeks of competition. Lawson is the only driver in the West Region top ten that has accumulated all 100 of his Regional Bonus Points.

Once drivers reach the 14 week mark of earning points, they will begin netting points by replacing their lowest point total for a given week with a higher point total. The maximum points a driver can earn in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Regional point standings is 800 which represents 14 50-point wins and 100 Regional Bonus Points.

The point standings in both Regions of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series will begin to shuffle has drivers close in on the 14-week mark of earning points and gain points on drivers that have already reached that milestone. Looking back behind the top ten in the West Region, there are two drivers worth watching in the coming weeks.

Chandler Petty of Austin, AR is currently 11th in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region standings with 582 points earned over 12 weeks of competition. What makes that total interesting for the 15-year-old driver is that seven of the 12 point weeks came in 40-point races with car counts of seven or less.

Petty, who has five wins this season, stands to possibly net a large number of points if he can compete in events with car counts of eight or more that pay 50 points to win. Petty can also still earn another 25 Regional Bonus Points.

Another driver that could be zipping up the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region point standings in the coming weeks is Duke Palasini of Leland, MS. Palasini has 511 points with five wins, and is 20th in the West Region standings. Palasini’s point total has been accumulated over nine weeks of competition, and he can still earn another 25 Regional Bonus Points.

Jimmy Elkins Jr. of Talladega, AL leads the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region standings with 671 points based on 12 weeks of competition to hold a six-point lead over Adam Gauldin of Talladega, AL, who has a 12-week total of 666 points. Both Elkins and Gauldin have earned their 100 Regional Bonus Points.

Kevin Maher of McDavid, FL is third with 662 points after turning in his 13th-week point total on Monday night at Flomaton Speedway. Maher could be one to watch in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region points chase, as seven of his 13 week point totals have come in 40-point races. Maher can still earn 25 more Regional Bonus Points.

Doug Ludwig of Grantville, GA is fourth in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS OMG East Region standings with 637 points over 12 weeks of competition. Ludwig has also earned his 100 Regional Bonus Points. Brian Ponder of Talladega, AL is fifth with 612 points over 12 weeks, and Russ Ogletree of Phenix City, AL is sixth with 590 points over 11 weeks.

Chris Griffin of Flomaton, AL is seventh with 582 points over 12 weeks, and like Maher, has eight of his 12 week point totals in 40-point events. Mike Combs of Odenville, AL is eighth with 547 points over 11 weeks, Trey White of Jenkinsburg, GA is ninth with 504 points over 11 weeks, and Josh Huss of Flomaton, AL is tenth with 484 points over 11 weeks.

Drivers outside the top ten of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region point standings to watch in the coming weeks are Tod Darda of LaGrange, GA and the 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region Champion Adam Martin of Talladega, AL.

Darda is currently 13th in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS OMG East Region standings with 444 points that include 100 Regional Bonus Points. Darda, who has three wins this season, has competed in only seven weeks of competition, and can still earn full points for seven more weeks. Martin, who has posted two wins this season, has 389 points over a nine week period, and can still race for full points for five more weeks. Martin can still earn another 75 Regional Bonus Points.

Drivers participating in NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series events compete for prize money at each event, and each track will pay out a point fund at the end of the season. Drivers are also competing for the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Regional point fund that pays $5,000 to the Champion and pays back through the top ten spots in each Region.
