Friese Wins Thriller at UFo “Connor Bobik 100” at Dog Hollow
Strongstown, PA (July 9, 2011) Devin Friese from Chambersburg, PA won his 2nd consecutive UFo Race Championship event at the “Connor Bobik 100” at Dog Hollow Speedway Sunday night. Friese came out on top of amazing side-by-side battles with Jeremy Miller and Jason Covert to take the $4,000 first prize in front of the massive crowd.
Covert and Friese paced the front row with Friese jumping off to the lead at the green flag. Friese built up a lead in the initial laps, as Miller quickly advance to 2nd. The race for the lead soon began on lap 8 as the leaders began to encounter lapped traffic. Miller and Covert closed on Friese, which began a race for the lead that would last the remainder of the 45-lap race. The 1st of many cautions disrupted the race on lap 10.
Friese chose the outside lane on each restart, and would run the high line of the track. Lap after lap, Friese and Miller would run side-by-side, with Friese slighty ahead at the line. Single car cautions appeared on laps 16, 19 and 23. On lap 24 a mutli-car tangle brought out the yellow flag.
On each restart, Friese and Miller would resume their battle with Miller leading lap 25. Friese took back the lead on lap 26 when a single car caution again slowed the race. Behind the exciting race for the lead, top 5 positions were constantly changing hands. Covert, 8th starting Jared Miley, 10th starting Boom Briggs and 12th starting Jared Hawkins trade positions lap after lap.
After another run of cautions, the racing got up to speed on lap 32. Friese and Miller continued to race side-by-side with Miller being scored the leader on lap 35 and Friese on lap 36. Coming down the backstraight on that lap, Miller came to a abrupt stop with apparent rear-end problems.
When the racing resumed Covert, then took over where Miller left off. The remaining 9 laps saw Friese and Covert run side by side, almost even at the line each lap. As the white flag appeared, the two again were even racing through turns 1 and 2 and down the back straight for the win. Covert slipped slightly in turn 3 allowing Friese to arrive 1st at the checker flag. Covert crossed the line just behind him in 2nd, with 8th starting Miley in 3rd, 13th starting Ron Delano in 4th and 12th starting Jared Hawkins in 5th. Boom Briggs, Gregg Satterlee, Sam Gindlesperger, Paul Dominick and Jim Struble rounded out the top 10.
The UFo Race Championship will face off with the United Late Model series at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 23. The “F-2 Shockwave” will feature twin 28-lap features paying $4,000 total to win.
The UFo Race Championship is an event marketing alliance among independent supertracks in the PA-WV-MD region. Participating speedways presents their own championship Super Late Model events under the UFo banner throughout the season using common tech and procedure rules with a year-end, group funded, point bonus for the top finishing drivers on the tour. Eligible tracks are within the 3 hour travel distance of the central point of Washington, PA.
