CARTERSVILLE, GA – Week 17 of the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series season will see ten events on the schedule with four races in the Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region and six races in the West Region. The tightest point battle is in the OMG East Region where just two points separate Talladega, AL drivers Jimmy Elkins Jr. and Adam Gauldin.

Elkins and Gauldin will begin netting points, as they are the only two drivers that have reached the 14-week mark of the season, while the rest of the drivers will attempt to close in as they race for full points.

A driver’s Regional point total consists of their best point race each week, and the best 14 week totals plus up to 100 Regional Bonus points count towards their season total. Regional Bonus Points can be earned by competing in a NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring race worth 25 points per race, or they can earn 25 points for each four races of perfect attendance at a single Weekly Racing Series track.

The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS leads the West Region point standings. McDuffie and eight other West Region Top 10 drivers have reached the 14-week mark in the season, and are netting points by trying to replace the lowest weekly point total with a higher one.

Penton Raceway in Penton, AL will attempt to get back into action on Friday night after three straight rainouts to open Week 17 competition in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region. Saturday night OMG East Region events are scheduled for Flomaton Speedway in Flomaton, AL, New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA and Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.

Elkins has 767 points and Gauldin has 765 in the top two spots of the NeSmith Chevrolet Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region standings. Elkins will be trying to net off his lowest 14-week point total of 41, while Gauldin will be trying to net off his lowest 14-week point total of 43.

Doug Ludwig of Grantville, GA, Mike Combs of Odenville, AL and Kevin Maher of McDavid, FL are third through fifth respectively in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS OMG East Region point standings, and all three drivers have one more week to earn full points in an effort to close in on Elkins and Gauldin.

Week 17 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region competition begins on Friday night at Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS. Saturday night West Region races are scheduled for Centerville Speedway in Centerville, AR, Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS, Drew County Speedway in Monticello, AR, Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS and Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS.

McDuffie with 786 points has a 38-point lead over Justin McRee of Tuscaloosa, AL with 746 points in the West Region standings. McDuffie will be trying to net on a 45, and McRee will be trying to net a 41.

Larry Murphy of Meridian, MS is third with 706 points and will be trying to close in on McDuffie and McRee by netting on a 25 point weekly total. Randy Boyd of Marion, MS is fourth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region standings with 699 points and will be trying to net on a 41-point week total.

Landon Frith of Terry, MS is the only driver in the Top 10 of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Top 10 point standings that has not yet reached the 14-week mark of the season. Frith, who is fifth in the West Region standings with 682 points, still has one more week to earn full points.

There are several drivers outside the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS West Region Top 10 in the point standings that could make big moves in the points chase over the next few weeks earning full points with good finishes and Regional Bonus Points.

Drivers participating in NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series events compete for prize money at each event, and each track will pay out a point fund at the end of the season. Drivers are also competing for the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Regional point fund that pays $5,000 to the Champion and pays back through the top ten spots in each Region.

The dirt late model race cars in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series are powered by the economical GM Performance Crate Engines that are built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications.
