Clinton, TN (7/21/11) Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville claimed two victories on the Southern All Stars tour last weekend at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia and Cleveland Speedway in Cleveland, Tennessee. The victories became official on Thursday as an independent testing lab has determined his tires do match the Hoosier Benchmark tires.

With his two wins, Ogle now moves into second place behind season long leader William Thomas of Phenix City, Alabama. Ogle’s teammate, Tommy Kerr of Maryville, TN also moved up one notch to third while David Payne of Murphy, North Carolina slid two spots back to fourth. Brian Reese of Sharpsburg, Georgia rounds out the top five.

Ringgold, GA (7/15/11) Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville captured his second career Southern All Stars win at Boyd’s Speedway on Friday night. It was his first win since 2005 when he won in dramatic fashion on July 4th weekend at Atomic Speedway, the track his family owned an operated for many years.

A rain-threatened night and a mud-soaked pit area awaited twenty-nine Super Late Model teams from seven states at the Georgia/Tennessee oval, most of which did not arrive on scene until after 6:00pm.

VP Racing Fuels Time Trials got underway at around 8:00pm with SAS points leader William Thomas of Phenix City, Alabama setting fast time with a 15.338 second lap, locking him into the pole position for the forty-lap main event with Murphy, North Carolina’s David Payne second quick. This would set up a front row, side-by-side start for the two drivers that have been knocking on Victory Lanes’ door on numerous occasions so far in 2011 but have each been denied.

It would be Payne that would take the lead once the green flag flew and on a night that seemed to belong to the driver affectionately dubbed ‘Coach’ as he opened up several car lengths advantage over Thomas and Ogle who fought tooth and nail for second until Ogle claimed that spot on or about lap ten.

As luck, or should we say as bad luck, would have it, this night would not belong to Payne as he suffered ignition failure on a lap nineteen restart following a caution and would have to retire for the night.

This would leave the battle to Ogle and Thomas but Chip Brindle of nearby Chatsworth, Georgia would wrestle second away from Thomas just past the halfway point but the fans would be treated to a thrilling run from hometown favorite Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga as he began making a charge toward the front after starting eleventh and needing to secure a B-Main win to earn that.

Johnson overcame Brindle for second on lap thirty-three but Ogle was by now in his own zip code out front. It would have required a caution for Johnson to make up that much ground but he did manage to close within a few car lengths before the checkers flew. Had it been a fifty-lap race it may have had a different outcome but the night turned out to belong to Ogle as he won for the first time with his new team Blount Motorsports with Tommy Kerr of Maryville as his teammate; the team’s first win in a couple of years.

“I want to thank Larry Garner (team owner) for giving me the chance to drive this car. We have really struggled at times but this will do us all some good.” When asked about the slick track conditions and his driving style for that type of surface, Billy replied: “You know I guess I have a reputation of doing good on slicker tracks but really I prefer the hammer down tracks but I guess I’ve just had more success on the slicker tracks.”

Cleveland, TN (7/16/11) Billy Ogle Jr. makes it two in a row as he leads all fifty laps and twenty-five starters to a green flag to checkers run in under fourteen minutes at Cleveland Speedway on Saturday night to put an exclamation point on the Boyd’s/Cleveland Doubleheader and pockets a cool 9-Grand for his weekend’s efforts.

Still celebrating his first Southern All Stars victory since 2005 just twenty-four hours earlier at Boyd’s Speedway in nearby Ringgold, Georgia, Ogle wasted no time in returning to victory lane and in the process accomplished another first as he captured his first career win at Cleveland Speedway after multiple second place and countless top five finishes at the historic south eastern, Tennessee oval.

After convening at the driver’s meeting at an un-usually late time around 8:00pm, the action got fast and furious as the program moved along at record speed and once the VP Qualifying and Hoosier Tire South B-Mains were complete, the SAS A-Main rolled onto the track at 10:30pm.

Ogle, who claimed the top spot in qualifying with a time of 13.788, wasted no time from the start as he got the jump on second quick qualifier Todd Morrow of nearby Old Fort, Tennessee and grabbed the lead from the outset.

With twenty-five starters taking the green (only one car retired from contention) it was a general feeling the race would be consumed by the usual flow of three to five cautions but with a smooth, slick racing surface that would not be the case.

There were a few tense moments, however, when the leaders began negotiating lapped traffic but with similar speeds being churned out by the back markers the leaders had to exercise lots of patience and that they did. Morrow was able to pull up to Ogle’s back bumper on several occasions but did not make a serious charge until the final lap when he dove down low in turn three but fell a car length short at the line.

Ronnie Johnson, running only for the second time in several years at his late father Joe Lee Johnson’s track, once again put on a great show for the crowd as he made a mid to late race charge from his seventh place starting spot to make passes on several strong cars before settling in at third behind Marrow and Ogle.

“This place hasn’t really been good to me over the years. I’ve had several second place finishes, a lot of good runs and a lot of bad runs here but this is my first win at Cleveland and to win two in a row now for this team just makes it that much more special”, stated Ogle in a post race interview.

how come SAS can get tires checked in 4 - 5 days and it takes a "major sanctioning body" almost 3 weeks?
