RINGGOLD, GA) It was back to regular racing at the 1/3 mile clay oval of Boyd’s Speedway. First up in qualifying heat races would bring the B-Hobby racers to the front stretch. Jonathon Sims and Drew Kennedy would secure front row starting position for the nights 15 lap feature by winning their respective heats. The ever competitive Crate Late Models were up next with a pair of previous feature winners taking their respective heats. Jeff Smith took heat one and Jason Welshan taking heat two. 16 A-Hobby division racers were on hand for their nights two heats with Joe Giggs and Jody Hixson leading the field of racers to the checkered flag. Next was a full field of outstanding all-star racers signed in for the nights 25 lap Main Event in Steel-Headed Late Model paying $1000 to the winner? With drivers such as Jamie Perry, Riley Hickman, Dale Huskey, John Owenby, Todd Morrow, Lamar Scoggins, James Gamble and the ever arriving late Ronnie Johnson all set to compete, the fans were truly in for a treat. In Heat #1 Todd Morrow would hold off John Owenby to take the pole for the nights feature. In Heat #2 a close battle with two and three wide racing for the lead saw Lamar Scoggins nip James Gamble and Jamie Perry for the outside pole position. In the final heats the FWD saw Daniel Burnette and last week’s feature winner Tommy Hughes take heat wins.

With the sun yet to set over the 1/3 mile clay the B-Hobbies were brought to the racing surface for the night’s first feature. Drew Kennedy took the early lead from his outside pole starting position, but a lap 1 caution would slow the field as the #C6 Ronnie Kerr would lose a tire off turn 4. The field lined up for the restart an early battle was brewing between the cars driven by leader Drew Kennedy and Patrick Wilson. Kennedy would hold the lead while taking the white flag but was being dogged by Wilson. Wilson would take the advantage down the back stretch an overtake Kennedy at the line for his second victory of the year. Wilson and Kennedy were followed by point’s leader Dallas Brooks, who struggled the entire night, Corey Sanders and Jim Gilbert.

Next up would bring the Crate Late Model “Welshan Show” to the racing surface. Could anyone knock Welshan off his winning streak? After taking the victory last week he was transported to a local hospital for chest pains, thankfully nothing was found. Welshan had taken a couple of victories at neighboring Crossville Speedway and Cleveland Speedway during the past week and was back at his favorite track to hopefully take yet another win. But starting from the pole would find his closest division point’s competitor in Jeff Smith. But as usually Welshan would take the early lead in a caution free race to take yet another victory. Smith would hold on for second and the third and fourth place finishers Robby Mason and Jerry Coffman would swap positions several times before Mason would finally settle into third with Coffman and Craig Burrows rounding out the top five.

The 16 car field of A-Hobbies was up next with a pair of newcomers starting from the front row. Joe Giggs and Soddy Daisy’s Jody Hixson would bring the field to the green flag. Hixson took the lead on lap 1, but a lap 5 cautions for Bo “Cowboy” Eaton spinning in turn 2 slowed the field. The field would restart only to slow again on lap 7 for the spinning Johnny Gulizia. Bo Eaton spun again on lap 8 ending his night with the second caution rule. Hixson trying for his first every victory couldn’t see the end of the race due to several late lap cautions. As eager as he was to see that final checkered flag fly he continued to suffer through caution after caution. Hixson would eventually take his first ever Feature Victory holding off Len “Gator” McNeese, Brandon Stanfield (also best finish of the year), Gary Johnson and Jordon Rodabaugh.

The Main Event of the evening brought the 18 car field of Steel-Headed Late Models All-Stars to the front stretch. A pair of Cleveland, TN veterans Todd Morrow and Lamar Scoggins would lead the field to the green. Todd Morrow would take the lead on lap 1 holding off Scoggins. James Gamble would secure the second place position on lap 4 from Scoggins as Riley Hickman who started 8th was making his way to the front. Scoggins would slip to 4th on lap 10 when John Owenby made the pass going down the back stretch. Ronnie Johnson who started 10th seemed to struggle on this night finding the way to the front more difficult than usual. The battle up front heated up as Gamble began pressing Morrow for the lead. As the two began to race side by side it took Gamble several laps of that side by side racing before he final secured the top spot. Now that Gamble was out front he certainly didn’t have clear sailing because in his rear view was now the hard charging Riley Hickman now in second and coming strong. Gamble was able to hold Hickman off for the last three laps to take a really hard fought victory. Following Gamble and Hickman was Todd Morrow, John Owenby and current point leader Jamie Perry.

The last feature of the evening saw the FWD finish a clean race with Thomas Gilbert holding off Daniel Burnette, Matt Patton, Hailey Cresswell and Richard Hickman. A good race was brewing between last week’s winner Tommy Hughes and Thomas Gilbert until Hughes was charged with spinning Denver Shrum as the two leaders closed on lap traffic.

Once again a great job but the staff of Boyd’s Speedway giving us a great racing surface and completing the entire racing program by 10:00 pm. As a quick note, Co-Owner Richard Harvey wants to thank all those that had himself and his family in your prayers during his recent stay in the hospital.
