Burgoon & Johnson Win UFo/ULMS F-2 Shockwave at PPMS with 6 Lead Changes!

Imperial, PA (July 23, 2011) Davey Johnson of Imperial, PA became the all-time UFo Race Championship feature winner and Brandon Burgoon of McDonald, PA captured his first UFo and ULMS win at the F-2 Shockwave at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway Saturday night. Both drivers earned $2,000 for their victories in an event that featured 6 lead changes.

Jared Miley and Brandon Burgoon led the field at the start of the 1st 28 lap feature race. After the initial start was fouled by a 5-car incident, Miley jumped out to the lead on the fast track when the race was restarted with Burgoon in hot pursuit. The 2nd caution of the night appeared for ULMS point leader Mike Knight, as his car stopped with a flat tire.

On the restart Burgoon powered into the lead from the bottom and jumped up to the cushion with Miley and Keith Barbara now chasing him. 2 additional cautions appeared for flat tires on lap 10 for Michael Norris and lap 15 for UFo point leader Devin Frise.. Burgoon continued to lead at each restart. 5th starting Dave Hess Jr found the bottom to his liking on the restarts and started to challenge Miley and Barbara each time the race returned to green.

Burgoon fought off the challenges and lead the remaining laps with Miley coming home in 2nd. Hess crossed the line in 3rd. Friese charged back from the tail to finish 4th with Davey Johnson finishing 5th. Mike Johnson and Boom Briggs finished 6th and 7th. Barbara experienced motor problems in turn 4 of the final lap and coasted across the line in 8th. Michael Davis and Chad McClellan rounded out the top 10.


An inversion of 10 was drawn for the 2nd feature. Miley opted to use his uncle’s 99 as a backup car, relegating him to the rear ahead of alternate drivers. With Barbara scratching from the race, the actual inversion was 8 cars. This put McCellan and UFo PENNational winner Davis on the front row. Like déjà vu of the “PENNational,” Davis motored into the lead after racing 3 wide down the backstraight on the 1st lap with McClellan and Briggs. Mike Johnson and Davey Johnson quickly moved up to 1st and 2nd and were in pursuit. The 1st caution of the event appeared for Burgoon on lap 5 with another caution for a multi-car incident on lap 6.

The remainder of the race would run under the green flag and would be an all-out war for the win. On the restart, Hess once again found magic on the bottom of the track and began to challenge Davis for the lead. Hess powered into the lead on lap 7, but Davis returned the favor and returned to the point on lap 8. Meanwhile, Davey Johnson was also working the bottom of the track and moved into 3rd.

As the race continued, the top 3 started to wage battle for the win. Hess moved up to the cushion to stay within striking distance of Davis, with Johnson finding the right groove on the bottom of the track. Johnson took over 2nd and then set his sights on Davis. As the two raced through lap traffic, they exchanged the lead 3 times in the final 5 laps with Johnson leading lap 24, Davis laps 25 and 26, and Johnson finally taking control with only 2 to go.

Johnson became the all-time UFo win leader with the victory with Davis following in 2nd. Friese became faster in the late stages of the race and grabbed 3rd with Hess in 4th. Mike Johnson crossed the line in 5th, with Jared Miley bringing the pink spec-motor 99 to a 6th place finish after starting 17th. Briggs, John Garvin Jr, Daryl Charlier, and Steve Baker rounded out the top 10.

The next UFo Race Championship event is the increased- payoff “Eriksen Grand Prix” at Hesston Speedway on Saturday, August 6. The UFo Super Late Models will race for $5,000 to win, $400 to start and $150 for non-qualifiers. The UFo and ULMS Super Late Models will clash once again at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 20 for the “Red Miley Rumble.” This race will pay $4,000 to win, but bonus money is being collected through position sponsors which will boost the payoff throughout the field. The Outlaw 410 Sprints will also be racing for $2,100 to win as part of the UFo vs. ULMS “Red Miley Rumble.”
