Eastaboga, AL (7/24/11) The Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series will head to the tradition rich Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama on Saturday July 30th for the 14th Annual Michael Head, Jr. Memorial.

The 54-lap / $5,400 to win affair pays tribute to the late son of 1991 Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series Champion Mike Head of Ellenwood, Georgia. Michael Head was tragically murdered in April of 1997 in suburban Atlanta. The annual fundraiser at the 1/3 mile red clay oval track, dubbed The Hornet's Nest, benefits the Kayla Head Trust Fund. Kayla is Michael's daughter.

Defending race winner Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN captured one of his multiple wins on the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series last year at this famed event topping a stellar field of super late models from several states in 2010.

The 2011 edition of the Michael head Jr. Memorial is expected to recapture that same level of excitement with drivers from the local, regional and national level competing for $20,000 in prize money including the winner’s share of $5,400.

Local racing divisions in action on Saturday include: The Sportsman, Crate Late Models, Thundercars, Hot Shots and Street Stock.

Pit gates are scheduled to open at 4:00PM and Grandstands at 5:00PM Central Time with the driver’s meeting slated for 6:30PM, hot laps at 7:00PM and racing action is expected to get under way at 8:00PM CST. Admission prices are as follows: Grandstands $20 (kids 9 and under Free) Pit Passes $30 (kids 3 and under Free).

How come GA doesn't have a memorial race for him? Isn't that where Mike Head is from, I personally don't remember him racing that much in Alabama. Just wondering!

Mike raced and won a ton of races in Alabama. The Michael Head, Jr. Memorial is a race that memorializes Mike's late son who was murdered in suburban Atlanta 14 years ago. Proceeds go to Michael's daughter Kayla.

The race was put together by Tim O'Brien shortly after Michael's death. Mike frequented Talladega Short Track which is where Tim was working at that time. BJ Parker agreed to help out via his Southern All Stars Racing Series as well.

Mike was the Southern All Stars Champion in 1991 and he was still a regular on the tour at the time. Mike was very close to the Southern All Stars family.
