(Ringgold, GA) With another week of above average temperatures the question of the week would be, would the racing on the 1/3 mile clay oval at Boyd’s Speedway continue to heat up. With several new racers visiting victory lane last week would this be the week that more new names would be added to the season features winners or would more of the repeat winners be back on top. The racing would get underway after a somber tribute to avid dirt racing fan, but more importantly a true hero. Sgt. Edward Koehler, 47 from Ringgold, GA was killed in Afghanistan while serving his country and protecting the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. Sgt. Koehler had visited Boyd’s Speedway which he did on regular bases just two days before shipping out to Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they travel down a very tough road. Sgt. Koehler “Thank You for your Ultimate Sacrifice”.

The regular weekly qualifying heat races would be up first with Taylor Sewell and Dallas Brooks taking each of their respected heats in B-Hobby. In Crate Late Model Mike Weeks took Heat #1 while Jeff Smith held off a hard charging Jason Welshan in Heat #2. In A-Hobby the familiar #48 driven by Booger Brooks would earn the pole position for the nights feature while Jordan Rodabaugh earned the outside front row starting position. The ever competitive Steel-Headed Late Models were up next with current division point’s leader Ringgold’s Jamie Perry topping the first group of competitors to earn his front row start. Tony Martin would hold off Todd Hernandez in Heat #2 to earn the right to start alongside Mr. Perry. The final Heats of the night would bring the FWD’s to the racing surface with Van Heatherly and Daniel Burnette taking the victories.

The first of the nights Features would bring the B-Hobby hot rods to the front stretch. With several racers having mechanical problems during the nights qualifying heats or being disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct the field of 13 would be narrowed to a field of 7 before the green flag flew. Even division point’s leader and multiple winner Dallas Brooks was unable to make the call. The remaining racers had their racing hats on as they raced caution free to the checkered flag. Raymond Shepard would take his first Boyd’s Speedway victory of 2011, and the winner’s purse of $170.00, he would be followed by Mike Chapman, Corey Sanders, Billy Hogan and Roy Baker.

In Crate Late Model the question would be, “could anybody break the winning streak of Maryville’s Jason Welshan”. With Welshan dominating the area Crate Late Model races he would be shooting for the 7th straight victory in a row at Boyd’s Speedway and his 22 win of the year. With a pair of seasoned veteran Crate racers starting from the front row Mike Weeks and Jeff Smith would lead the field to the green. And for the second race in a row the racers would battle caution free to the checkered flag. Welshan would start from the outside second row position behind Jeff Smith. Smith would take the early lead on lap one with Weeks in tow; Welshan wouldn’t take long to dispose of Weeks for the second place running position. Smith would be on his game on this night and was able to defend each move Welshan would make to take the top running position. As the two began to work through lapped traffic Smith seemed to pick the perfect line every time. Smith would go on to hold off Welshan and break the 6 race winning streak to earn a hard fought victory. Behind Welshan were Mike Weeks, Rick Hixson and Jerry Coffman. With Smith’s win he took home the top prize of $800 but also closed the points between the two to only 28 points.

With a new winner in the A-Hobby division last week could Jody Hixson repeat his winning ways or would a new winner find his way to Boyd’s Speedways winners circle proudly sponsored by Jody Millard’s Pest Control. But this division wouldn’t be outdone as the third race in a row would go caution free to the finish. A pair of previous winners in Booger Brooks and Jordan Rodabaugh would lead the field to the green. Brooks got the jump from the inside of his front row starting position with Rodabaugh close behind. Brooks would have clear sailing as he would find himself in victory lane once again and taking the winner’s purse of $250. Brooks and Rodabaugh would be followed by Len “The Gator” McNeese, Brandon Stanfield and Steve Tate. Last week’s winner Jody Hixson would settle in to sixth place finish.

The nights Feature Race would bring the 21 car field of Steel-Headed Late Models to the front stretch for the fans to eyeball their favorite racers machine. With current point’s leader Jamie Perry holding a slim lead over second place competitor Lamar Scoggins, Perry would get the start from the pole position by winning the first of two qualifying heats. Perry would take the early lead over Tony Martin, but the night’s first feature race caution would fly on lap 4 as Ricky Lewis would spin in turn 1. During the caution the D11 of Davey Davis would retire his machine to the pits with mechanical issues. Perry would take the green once again but would slow again with the spin of Justin Fairbanks in turn 2 on lap 6 ending his night with a left rear flat. Once under green Perry began to take control expanding his lead over Martin. Another caution on lap 9 for a spinning John Smartt would slow the field under caution. The caution would fly again on lap 11 for the final time as Ricky Lewis spun for the second time ending his night with the two caution penalty. Perry would continue to lead, but looking in the rear he would see a hard charging Lamar Scoggins now on his rear bumper. Scoggins starting from the 5th place starting position after working his way back through the field during his qualifying heat after early contact with several racers left his left front nose heavily damaged. With repairs made his racing machine may have been heavily duct taped, but certainly didn’t hurt the racing performance. As laps began to run out Scoggins would move closer and closer, but at the end Perry held on to take yet another victory and expand his points lead over Scoggins to seven points. Following Perry and Scoggins would be Tony Martin, Riley Hickman and Jake Knowles.

The last of the night’s feature would bring the FWD’s to the front stretch. With a pair of racers looking for their first victories of the year at Boyd’s Speedway, Van Heatherly and Daniel Burnette would lead the way. A like everyone other than the Steel-Headed Division they too would go caution free to the checkered flag. And at the end Thomas Gilbert would revisit victory lane for the second week in a row followed by Daniel Burnette, Richard Hickman, Hailey Cresswell and Matt Patton.

Once again the staff of Boyd’s Speedway had the fans heading to the parking lot with all races completed by 10:00. Next week the S.R.R.S. Super Late Models invade the 1/3 mile clay oval for a 40 lap $3000 to win. Make your plans to come early as many of the area’s best will be on hand to compete. An autograph session is in the works for many of the classes before racing gets underway, so come early.
