Bluegrass 50 Fast Facts and Tidbits
-This event debuted at Bluegrass Speedway in 1995 and John Gill of Mitchell, IN picked up one of three career Bluegrass Speedway feature checkered flags in scoring the $6,000 payday for the race, the most it has ever paid to win. From 1996 through 1999, the Bluegrass 50 was not on the Bluegrass Speedway schedule.

-The race returned to the schedule in 2000 under first year Bluegrass Speedway promoters David and Anita Ferrell and was sanctioned by the Northern All Stars Late Model Series and now retired Dirt Late Model pilot Kevin Claycomb of Vincennes, IN picked up the race win over Eddie Carrier, Jr., Shannon Babb, Don O’Neal, and Scott James.

-The 2001 version of the Bluegrass 50 was again sanctioned by the Northern All Stars Late Model Series and featured Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY in victory lane ahead of a hard charging Mike Jewell, followed by Don O’Neal, Kevin Claycomb, and 1995 winner John Gill. This would mark the first of three straight wins by Lanigan in the race.

-In 2002, the NALMS gang would sanction the final tune-up before the Dirt Track World Championship that was being held at Bluegrass Speedway and Darrell Lanigan would again visit the Bluegrass Speedway victory lane, defeating the likes of John Gill, Whitney McQueary, Rick Corbin, and Ray Cook.

-The 2003 version of this race was sanctioned by the O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series and Darrell Lanigan would again hit paydirt when he would pass Brad Neat with 5 laps remaining to win the event. Neat would take second, with Mike Marlar, John Gill, and Steve Casebolt, Jr. rounding out the five over an event record 67 entries.

-In 2004, the O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series again sanctioned the event and Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY scored the biggest win of his racing career at that time by taking the $5,000 payday over Scott James, Steve Barnett, Jerry Rice, and Mike Jewell. A record 25 cars started the main event.

-The 2005 edition of the Bluegrass 50 saw 1995 winner John Gill become only the second repeat winner in the history of the race as he led all 50 laps in scoring what was his first feature checkered flag of the 2005 racing season. Mike Jewell would nip Tim Tungate for the runner-up slot, while Terry English and Bryan Barber rounded out the top five in the 50-car field that was on hand for the race

-Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN would pick up his second major win of the ’06 season at Bluegrass Speedway by winning the 2006 Bluegrass 50 event after winning a three way battle with Greg Johnson and Timmy Yeager in the first half of the race and withstanding a final lap turn four slidejob pass by Johnson, whom Owens would dive back beneath of off turn four and grab a half-car length win over Johnson, Brad Neat, Dustin Neat, and Ben Adkins.

-For 2007, a total of 39 entries signed in for the ninth edition of the Bluegrass 50 and Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would score his second O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series event of the season at Bluegrass Speedway by scoring the 50 lap, $5,000 to win event. Marlar would win the event going away, while Michael England would outduel Scott James for the runner-up slot, with Bryan Barber winning an entertaining battle with Justin Rattliff to finish fourth. Of special note in this event, the top six finishers and eight of the top ten finishers were second generation racers, with one of those being a third generation pilot.

-The 2008 edition of the event would be called the Kentucky’s Best Racing Bluegrass 50 and would videotaped by the Outdoor Channel. Jason Keltner would lead all 50 laps in scoring what was an extremely popular win at the track where he was track champion at in 2006. Following Keltner to the checkered flag in what is his biggest career win were Dustin Neat, Brad Neat, Eddie Carrier, Jr., and Jordan Bland.

-For 2009, Victor Lee of Stanford, KY would finally win an event at Bluegrass Speedway by claiming the 11th Annual Bluegrass 50 victory with a turn four, last lap pass of Terry English to become the fourth different leader of the race and pick up the $5,000 payday as Lee only lead about the last 150 feet of the event to get the win. English would finish second, with Dustin Neat, David Webb, and Dustin Linville completing the top five.

-The 2010 version of the Bluegrass 50 would only see 14 drivers take the green flag in the $5,000 to win main event, but the race would feature a dandy battle for the lead, with Mike Marlar grabbing the top spot from Mike Jewell on lap 34 and racing away to the win over Justin Rattliff, Mike Jewell, Aaron Hatton, and Eric Wells.

-A total of ninety-three (93) different racers have made the main event for the Bluegrass 50 race.

-In 2010, three drivers made their first ever Bluegrass 50 and those drivers were Doodle Farris, Jarryd Holshouser, and Tim Rivers.

-Dustin Neat, Mike Jewell, Tim Tungate, and Brad Neat have made the Bluegrass 50 more than any other drivers with 9 appearances. Aaron Hatton is next in line with 8 starts. Johnny Wheeler and Mike Marlar have made seven appearances in the Bluegrass 50. Drivers with 6 starts in the race are Rick Corbin, John Gill, Whitney McQueary, Jeff Watson, and Joey Daniel. Those racers having 5 starts each in the event are Steve Barnett, Eddie Carrier, Jr., Scott James, Tyrel Todd, Timmy Yeager, and David Webb.

-The 2011 Bluegrass 50 will be sanctioned by the first-year STARS Midwest Dirt Racing League and will again pay $5,000 to win the event. The UMP Modified and UMP Sportsman divisions will provide support division action for this event.
