Late Model Preview
The STARS Midwest Dirt Racing League will sanction the Late Model portion of the 7th Annual Iron-Man Classic. The series has ran five events thus far in 2011 and has had five different feature winners; Justin Rattliff, Rohn Moon, Ross White, Dustin Linville, and R. J. Conley. Linville is the series points leader as he holds a 145 point lead over second place Michael Chilton.

With the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series off this weekend and no other big races going on nearby on Friday night, a great field of Late Models is expected to be in attendance. Many drivers will be coming Friday to not only race for their piece of the $17,770 purse, but also to get laps for the $10,000 to win “Southern 50” on September 2nd.

The Late Model action at the Southern Ohio Speedway has been fast and furious all season long. Eddie Carrier Jr., R. J. Conley, and Jackie Boggs, all SOS feature winners this season, are expected to be top contenders this weekend. Another driver to watch for will be Cross Lanes, West Virginia’s Tim Dohm. Dohm has two fast times this year along with 2nd and 3rd place finishes. R. J. Conley comes into Fridays event as the SOS points leader.

UMP Modified Preview
Just like in the Late Model division, the action in the UMP Modifieds this year has been fast and furious as well. In three races there have been three different feature winners; Bart Hartman, Adam Colley, and Shawn Holliday. Each feature event this season has featured an incredible battle for the lead in some of the best Modified action witnessed in the region this year. One driver to watch this week is 17 year old Luke Jordan. Jordan has two consecutive second place finishes and has led laps in the past two feature events. Adam Colley heads into Friday as the points leader.

Bomber
The Bomber feature event last weekend saw a great race between Conard Newman and David Dunn. Newman ended up getting the feature win after a great side by side battle with Dunn. Another driver who has been impressive the past two weeks is Eric Dennison. Dennison has two consecutive third place finishes. The Bomber car count has picked up each week as SOS officials hope the trend continues this week. Conard Newman heads into Friday as the points leader.

Sport Mods
SOS officials still want to emphasize that they are behind the Sport Mod class 100%. “We knew going into it that it would take time for the class to grow”, stated SOS co-promoter T. J. Layne. “There are several cars in the process of being built so we think we will have enough cars to run the class soon. If we can get 2 cars to come and run we will run the Sport Mods in their own class. I think by this time next year we will be seeing 15-20 cars a week in this class.”

Track Conditions
SOS co-promoter T. J. Layne issues a statement regarding track conditions.

“The racing the first three weeks has been fantastic, but we have unfortunately had an issue with the track getting dustier than it should be. We expected it the first race since it was the first time the track had been ran on in 5 years, but when the dust seemed to get worse for the second race we quickly realized it was a problem we would have to fight because of there was too much sand in the clay. So, before last weeks races we ripped the track up and soaked it several times to get moisture into the surface. Unfortunately, that didn’t solve the dust problem and it also caused the track to get rough.

This week we are disking the track up and then packing it back in with the sheeps foot roller to fix the holes in the track now and also pack the track in good so it won’t rough up again. We are also going to use a dust control suppressant made for race tracks to help with the dust issue. Combining that with a couple of track prep technique changes, I believe that we’ll have the track much better this Friday night.

We want everyone to understand that we are doing all we can to resolve the dust issue. The dust has not hurt the racing at all as we’ve had some of the best racing anywhere, but we understand that dust causes problems for both the drivers and spectators alike so we’re going to do everything we can to fix it. We can’t thank the drivers and fans enough for their continued support.”
