Aug. 27th GA For fair Tax / David Ragan Ford Outlaw Latemodel Series!
The race started with Hodges on pole and Steve Barker joining him on the outside. This was Steves best qualifying effort of the year and first time to start on the front row.
A change in starting procedure resulted in a couple of false starts before getting it right. The change in starts calls for the flagman to start the race instead of the pole sitter. We will still be working on these starts, trying to keep them as even as possible for the sake of improving the racing.
The third start was the charm and resulted in side by side racing to the first turn before anyone could get the advantage. Hodges and Barker entered turn one even with Hodges taking the lead off two. Dutton and Cone got by Barker off turn two going down the back straight. Dutton caught Hodges in turn four and was hot on his bumper down the front stretch. Dutton continued to hug Hodges bumper for several laps, showing a lot of speed. At lap 10 Mike Silvey looped his machine in turn one, bringing out the caution for the first time. Silvey didn't hit anything, and was able to straighten his car and continue on. During this caution Duttons engine suddenly shut down and would not refire. He had to be pushed to the pits, ending his night and what appeared to be a very strong run. This is Stuarts second DNF in a row and has to be very dissappointing after having such a fast car.
The restart had Hodges and Cone on the front row and Barker and Sivey in the second row. Once again the side by side even start resulted in a drag race to turn one with Hodges once again pulling to the advantage down the back stretch. Barker pulled ahead of Silvey followed by #18 Stewart Smith and #97 Mitchell Thomaston.
At around lap 25 Smith spun his #18 in turn four bringing out the caution. Smith didn't hit anything and was able to continue on. This resulted in another side by side start between Hodges and Cone. This time Cone was able to gain the lead and set sail with Hodges on HIS bumper for a change. Cone continued to lead for several laps with the #16 looking high and low for an opening. Hodges was finally able to make the pass with about 10 to go and continued on to take his second win of the series.
Final results were Hodges 1st, Cone 2nd, Barker 3rd, Silvey 4th, Smith 5th, Thomaston 6th and Dutton 7th.
Our next race is October 1st. Judging by the number of phone calls we are receiving and verbal committmints, we may have a car count approaching 20 cars. This would be our largest car count yet.
