CARTERSVILLE, GA – There are just seven races on the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Week 23 schedule, but they are important events, as they have championship implications in both the West Region and the Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region.

With five weeks left in the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series season, the championship hunt has come down to two drivers in the West Region and four drivers in the OMG East Region. Included in this week’s events are two NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring events that will award Regional Bonus Points.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Week 23 events begin on Friday night with races at Batesville Motor Speedway in Batesville, AR and Malden Speedway in Malden, MO. Saturday night West Region events will be highlighted by a $1,000-to-win race at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS, and Drew County Speedway in Monticello, AR will also be in action.

The only event scheduled for the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region will be on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.

Just four points separate the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region title contenders. The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS leads the West Region points chase with 796 points, and Duke Palasini of Leland, MS is in second with 792 points.

McDuffie has to win to net on his best 14-week point total, as his best 14 includes ten 50-point wins, four 49-point second-place finishes, and 100 Regional Bonus Points. Four more 50-point wins against a field of eight cars or more would give McDuffie a perfect score of 800 points in quest of his second NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region title.

Palasini has ten wins, two 49-point second-place finishes, two 47-point fourth-place finishes, and 100 Regional Bonus Points which make up his best 14-week point total of 792. A 50-point win for Palasini this weekend would net him three points, and an opportunity to close the gap on McDuffie to one point.

Jimmy Elkins Jr. of Talladega, AL leads the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region standings with 789 points to hold a six-point advantage over the second-place driver Adam Gauldin of Talladega, AL, who has 783 points. Elkins will be trying to net on a 47, and Gauldin will be trying to net on a 46.

With five weeks remaining in the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series season, Elkins can still net on a 47, a 48, and three 49s. If he wins out in the next five weeks, he could potentially have 797 points. If Gauldin wins out in the next five weeks, he would net on a 46, two 47s, a 48, and a 49 to bring his best 14-week total to 796.

Russ Ogletree of Phenix City, AL is sixth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region standings with 737 points, but he is still a title contender. Ogletree can still earn another 25 Regional Bonus Points and net on a 37, a 41, a 44, and two 48s. Five wins in the remaining weeks of the season would bring Ogletree’s total to 794.

Tod Darda of LaGrange, GA is seventh in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region standings with 717 points, but he also is still an OMG East Region title contender.

Darda still has one more week to earn full points before he reaches the 14-week mark of his season. Five 50-point wins in the five remaining weeks of the season would bring Darda’s point total to 796. To date, Darda’s four lowest weekly point totals are a 44, a 47, and two 49s.

There are still several drivers in each Region looking to earn Top 10 points-fund paying spots. Many drivers are also looking to earn Regional Bonus Points to move up the standings. There are two ways to earn up to 100 Regional Bonus Points. A driver can earn 25 Regional Bonus Points for every four weeks of perfect attendance at one track.

Drivers can also earn 25 Regional Bonus Points by participating in a NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring event during the 27-week NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series season. There will be two opportunities this weekend.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Tour will be at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS for a two-day event this Friday night and Saturday night with the $5,000-to-win 6th Annual Coca-Cola 75, and on Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS for a $2,000-to-win 40-lap race.

There are two drivers in the Top 10 of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region point standings that can still earn 25 Regional Bonus Points – Justin McRee of Tuscaloosa, AL in the sixth spot, and Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS in the ninth spot.

Looking ahead, NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Old Man’s Garage (OMG) East Region track New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA has exercised its option to host twin feature races on Saturday night, September 10 to make up for two rainouts earlier this season. Talladega Short Track will be off that Saturday night, so that event could have championship implications.

Drivers participating in NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series events compete for prize money at each event, and each track will pay out a point fund at the end of the season. Drivers are also competing for the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Regional point fund that pays $5,000 to the Champion and pays back through the top ten spots in each Region.

The dirt late model race cars in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series are powered by the economical GM Performance Crate Engines that are built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications. There are two engines to choose from, the 400 horsepower aluminum-head 604 engine and the 350 horsepower steel-head 602 engine that gets a 150-pound weight break.
