MADDEN SETS NEW TRACK RECORD, PICKS UP THE WIN

Chris Madden was the class of the field on the first night of the Dirt Late Model Super Nationals at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat VA.,
posting a new track record with an unbelievably quick lap of 16.188 around the smooth ˝ mile speedway. Madden put himself on the pole after a rain shower swept over the track at approximately 7pm. Track crews worked feverishly to roll the speedway quickly back into shape with cars making it onto the track by 930 pm. Hot Laps saw teams dialing in the chassis to ready themselves for Shell Racing Solutions time trials.

Madden in a Bloomquist chassis, set a new track record in qualifying with a 16.188. Madden was followed in qualifying by Ross Bailes, Earl Pearson Jr, who was a surprise entry wheeling the Justin Labonte ride, was 3rd quick and Ultimate points leader, Chip Brindle was 4th. Ty Dillon, Casey Roberts, Chris Ferguson and Johnny Pursley rounded out the top 8 with all other drivers going to heats to set the field for the $4000 main event. “Kid Quick” Zack Mitchell used the outside front row of Heat 1 to his advantage and beat Brian Reese to the first turn. Mitchell held off the field to pick up the Heat race win. Heat Race 2 saw Jeff Smith lead the field to the green flag and never looked back as he held off a late charge by Mike Gault.

With the field set, Ultimate teams made their final adjustments and made their way to the grid for the main event. With Madden and Bailes leading the field to the green, the crowd was on their feet ready for the 40 lap feature event. As the green fell, Madden quickly jumped out to the lead. Caution fell on lap 2 as Jeff Smith, Mike Gault and others got tangled up as they checked up for debris on the speedway. Smith pulled it pit side for quick repairs to the front nose and returned to the track. Madden again took off when the green fell as we went clean and green till lap 24 when Mike Gault pounded the wall entering turn 3. Gault climbed out under his own power but the 17 was done for the night. Madden again took the green with Earl Pearson to his outside. Pearson had nothing for Smokey Madden with Madden eventually opening up a straightaway lead. Ty Dillon battled Pearson for several laps eventually getting by to take over the 2nd spot. When the checkers fell, Madden collected the $4000 winner’s purse followed by Ty Dillon, Earl Pearson Jr., Chip Brindle, and Chris Ferguson. Full results listed below..

As for the Ultimate Points battle, there were no changes in the top 3 with Brindle extending his points lead over Casey Roberts by 2 to take a 10 point margin into the 2nd night of Dirt Late Model Super Nationals at Wythe Raceway. Ferguson remains 3rd followed by Ross Bailes moving up one spot over Daniel Baggerly. Night 2 will test the teams’ endurance as well as the equipment as teams vie for the $5000 to win feature of the Dirt Late Model Super Nationals. Wythe Raceway will be the place to be again Saturday Sept 3rd. Gates will open at 4pm.
