Keith Barbara Comes from Tenth to Win 2011 ‘Pittsburgher’

September 19, 2011 (South Park, PA) Keith Barbara and Forbes Field Motorsports have the ‘Pittsburgher’ weekend at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway circled on their calendar every year. Keith has entered every ‘Pittsburgher’ event since the year 2000 looking for that elusive victory. The wait is over as Barbara picked up, what is perhaps the most prestigious victory of his career this past Saturday, September 17, in the $7,000 to-win ‘Pittsburgher’.

Keith’s ‘Pittsburgher’ weekend got off to a rough start during the ‘I-Monster’ titled, $2,000 event on Friday, September 16 when Barbara was involved in an incident just one lap into his heat race sending him to the pits and to one of consolation races. Keith worked his way up to a third place finish in the B-Main to transfer to the 33-lap main event. After starting in the 21st slot, Keith raced his way to an 11th place finish in the caution-free preliminary feature.

The following night, the upbeat Barbara was confident after how well the car performed the night before. ‘If we could have gotten a caution or two, we could have finished a lot better than 11th last night,’ Keith said in preparation for Saturday’s headliner. When the action got underway, Keith started eighth in his ten car heat race and advanced to third to qualify for the feature event and line him up tenth on the grid. After the six-wide salute to the fans, Barbara began to methodically work his way to the front. Keith made his way into the top five in the early stages of the event but after a caution, was shuffled back to the seventh slot before finding the bottom groove to his liking. Barbara began moving back up through the field and found himself in third behind race leader Jared Miley and multi-time ‘Pittsburgher’ winner Davey Johnson when the caution flew on lap 51 of the 66 lap event. When racing resumed, Miley lost a driveshaft on lap 54 moving Keith into the second spot. Barbara got under Johnson coming out of the fourth corner forcing Johnson to change his line and run the bottom to block Keith. Barbara took to the high side to get by Johnson with just under ten laps remaining and lead the rest of the way to score his first ‘Pittsburgher’ victory.

‘The ‘Pittsburgher’ has always been a race we’ve wanted to win.’ Barbara said. ‘We’ve come close before (previous best ‘Pittsburgher’ finish was fourth in 2010) and we’ve won the Friday show, but this is a pretty big win for us,’ Keith continued, ‘and to pass Davey (Johnson) to do it…man, he’s always so good there. The car was just great, I could put it anywhere and it would go. I need to thank our sponsors, Forbes Field Garage, JNJ Motorsports Media, RanGroup Racing Tours, Mastersbilt by Huey, Hoosier Racing Tire, Triangle Benefit Services, Domhoff Racing Engines, and everyone else that supports us.’
