Hawkins “ROAR”s from 18th for $5,000 UFo Win at Roaring Knob!
(Markleysburg, PA) UFo “ROAR” at Roaring Knob lived up to the hype. After 55 of the most ferocious laps ever and 3 lead changes among 4 drivers, Jared Hawkins of Fairmont, WV scored his 4th UFo win of 2011 and his 5th all-time win. Hawkins started 18th on the grid and took the lead with only 2 laps remaining. Hawkins is now tied with Davey Johnson for the all-time most UFo wins.
After a redraw of the top 12 for the feature lineup, 2011 track champion Scott Rhodes and UFo point leader Devin Friese brought the field to the green. Friese jumped into the lead using the outside groove. The first caution of the race appeared on lap 4 and found the top 3 running order of Friese, Rhodes, Mason Zeigler with Butch McGill already advancing to 4th using the slick bottom of the race track.
On double file restart, McGill advanced to 2nd behind Friese. Another cautions appeared on lap 7. On the restart, Quintin Wyandt spun while Corey Conley and Jared Miley made contact and came to a stop as well with all 3 drivers going to the rear. When the race resumed, Friese remained on the high groove with McGill on the low groove, and the duo spent the next 11 laps in a side-by-side battle for the lead. While Friese edged ahead on each lap at the scoring line, McGill nosed ahead at different points on the race track.
When the race restared, so did the battle for the lead between Friese and McGill. On lap 26, disaster stuck Friese with the rear axle of his car breaking, bring out the caution. McGill was the new leader, with Friday night’s winner Jason Covert in 2nd followed by 12th starting Keith Jackson, Gregg Satterlee and Tim Senic.
On the restart, McGill and Covert began their own race for the lead, while Jared Hawkins flexed his muscle and moved to 4th. McGill and Covert continued their war on wheels until lap 37, when motor problems caused McGill to exit. Covert now had the lead to himself and began to pull away from the field, opening up a ¼ track advantage.
With Covert firmly in the lead, all eyes were focused on an amazing 5-car battle for 2nd between Satterlee, Hawkins, Jackson, Tim Senic and Conley. Lap after lap the 5 cars swapped positions with Jeremy Miller soon getting into the action. With only 2 laps remaining, Senic and Jackson were collected in a spin with Danny Mitchell, setting up a 2-lap shootout for the win.
Covert chose the inside lane on the double file restart with Hawkins to his outside. When the green appeared, Hawkins surged into the lead while Covert’s car appeared to slow. Hawkins lead the final 2 laps to take the $5,000 win while Conley, who came back from the rear, and Miller also got by Covert to finish 2nd and 3rd. Covert held on for 4th, with 19th starting John Garvin Jr. taking 5th. Satterlee, Dutch Davies, Ron Delano Jr., Keith Barbara and Rhodes rounded out the top 10.
Heat races were won by Friese, Delano, Satterlee and Covert with Mitchell and Jared Hawkins winning the consolations.
