CARTERSVILLE, GA – Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC and David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN have ramped up the excitement of the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series $20,000 Championship battle for the NeSmith Cup. They are tied for the point lead with four events left on the 2011 schedule and are also tied for the Hedman Husler of the Year Award.

Breuer is in his first full season of NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series competition, and is looking take his place in the history of the season by becoming the fifth different champion in the seven-year history of the series. Gentry is a two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion looking to build on a legacy that includes leadership in several different career statistics.

Breuer and Gentry have held the first two spots respectively on the points list since the fourth race of the season on April 2 at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN. Breuer has two wins this season with the first coming in Round 5 at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS on April 9, and the second victory coming in Round 7 on May 21 at New Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.

In addition to being the first two-time winner this season, Breuer recorded 11 straight top ten finishes in the first 11 races of the 2011 season. Going into Round 12 at Greenville Speedway on October 7, Breuer held his biggest point lead of the season over Gentry with a 36-point margin. There were high expectations for Breuer in returning to the site of his first win this season.

It turned out to be Breuer’s worst night of the season. He failed to qualify for the main through qualifying, heat races, and the B-main races. The point leader had to take a provisional starting spot and lined up 23rd to start the big show. Breuer had two spins in the race and was forced to the pits after the second spin on lap 26 due to the two-spin rule and finished 19th.

“We brought a new car to Greenville and put the setup we had in April on it,” Breuer said. “For whatever reason, it just wouldn’t work in the Friday night race, but my AES Racing crew kept working on it, and by the feature race on Saturday night, it started working a lot better.”

Gentry also had an uphill climb on September 7 at Greenville Speedway. While running in the top ten, Gentry was ticketed with a caution flag on lap seven, but he rallied from the back of the field during the remainder of the 40-lap race to finish sixth. Going into Round 13 on October 8 at Greenville Speedway, Gentry had trimmed Breuer’s point lead to ten points.

Both drivers had better nights at Greenville Speedway on October 8, but it was Gentry making up the ten point deficit on Breuer with his first series win since 2007 in dominating fashion. Breuer started 13th and finished fifth to keep a share of the point lead.

Breuer and Gentry share the point lead at 1,160 points going into Round 14, which will appropriately be right back at Greenville Speedway for the $3,000-to-win 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals on November 3-5. It’s going to be the most anticipated race of the season, as both drivers have enjoyed their best nights of 2011 on the ¼-mile high-banked gumbo clay oval.

Breuer and Gentry have had to work and drive hard for their share of the point lead, as they are also tied for the lead of the Hedman Husler Hard Charger point standings with 58 points. At each NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring event, a driver earns one point for each position they improve from the start of the race to the end of the race.

At the end of the season, Hedman Husler Hedders, the Official Hedder of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, will award the driver with most Hedman Husler points a $1,000 check as the Hedman Husler of the Year.

The tale of the statistical tape has Breuer with two wins, nine top five finishes, 12 top ten finishes and $14,150 in season earnings in the first 13 events of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series season.

Gentry has one win, seven top fives, and like Breuer, Gentry has 12 top five finishes in the first 13 races of the season. Gentry’s only finish outside the top ten was an 11th-place effort in Round 3 at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL on February 26. Gentry has earned $10,050 so far this season. Gentry is also the only driver this season to complete all 650 laps of competition.

“The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series is one of the most competitive dirt late model series in the country and the key to winning the championship is to finish races,” Gentry said. “We haven’t won as many races as we would have liked to at this point of the season, but we’re finishing all of the races.”

Gentry knows about winning championship and races with the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series. Gentry won the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS titles in 2006 and 2007 and is the all-time career earnings leader in seven-year history of the season, pocketing $126,445 to date in prize and point fund money.

Another NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series statistical category Gentry leads is the all-time lap leader, having been at the head of the field for 492 laps. Out of that total, 352 of those leading laps came in 2006 to set a single-season record. He is third all-time in NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS victories with nine wins, and seven of those came in 2006 which is also a single-season record.

Breuer and Gentry are tied for the point lead going into the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals on November 3-5 at Greenville Speedway. After that race is over, they will no longer be tied, but there will still be three races remaining on the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series schedule to decide the championship, as well as the NeSmith Cup and the $20,000 that goes with it.

After the November 3-5 Greenville Speedway race, the last three races are scheduled for Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS on November 19, Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS on November 20, and the season finale, the $10,000-to-win 7th Annual World Championship Race at East Bay Raceway Park on December 2-3.

So how do you choose who is the favorite to win the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Championship? The statistics after the first 13 races show you can’t. They are tied with 1,160 points and tied in top ten finishes with 12.

Breuer has the advantage in the win column with two to Gentry’s one. The NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS tie-breaker system begins with the most number of wins. Breuer also gets the nod in top five finishes with nine to Gentry’s seven. But Gentry leads in laps completed with 625 to 611 for Breuer. Gentry also has the edge in average finish in the first 13 races at 5.46 to 5.54 for Breuer.

If there was a betting line for Breuer vs. Gentry in the contest for the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Championship, it would simply say “pick ‘em.”
