CARTERSVILLE, GA – Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA will be looking to keep his annual winning streak at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS alive when he competes in his 121st consecutive NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring event in the $3,000-to-win 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals on November 3-5.

Turner has two career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series victories, and both wins have come at Greenville Speedway. His first win came on September 4, 2009 in a race that featured a four-wide run to the checkered flag with Eric Cooley, Larry Boutwell and Ben McCreary. The second win came on July 31, 2010.

In seven NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series starts at Greenville Speedway, Turner has two wins, a second, two thirds, a seventh and a ninth. The second-place finish came in another close run to the checkered flag this year on October 7. Turner came off the fourth turn for the finish three-wide with Johnny Stokes and Mark Tice. Stokes won the race followed by Turner and Tice.

The worse finish Turner has had at Greenville Speedway was a ninth-place run on October 8, but it wasn’t because he missed the set up. Turner was running fifth and headed for the front of the pack when his race car broke a cross member at the halfway point in the race. Turner hung on to finish ninth, and after he drove under the checkered flag, the steering box fell off the car.

To say Turner is excited about returning to Greenville Speedway for the $3,000-to-win Gumbo Nationals on November 3-5 would be an understatement. The ¼-mile high-banked gumbo clay oval has become his second home.

“Our success at Greenville Speedway just seemed to fall into our lap,” Turner said. “We were fast the first time we went there, and we’ve used the same set up every time we’ve raced there. We’ve kept good notes that show the track is consistent in that it blows off for the main event and gives us at least three different grooves to race on. Then it’s all about my right foot.”

In the seven-year history of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model series, Turner is the only driver to have competed in each of the 120 races the series has held since its inception in 2005. That has earned Turner the title of being the “Ironman” of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series.

Turner is currently third in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings behind Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC and two-time series champion David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN, who are tied for the point lead. That’s some tough competition for Turner not only to challenge for the $20,000 series title, but also to keep his winning streak alive.

Both Breuer and Gentry have NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring wins this season at Greenville Speedway. Breuer took his first of two series wins this season at Greenville Speedway on April 9, and Gentry picked up his first win of the season on October 8. Breuer and Gentry have 1,160 points and Turner has 1,054 points.

Breuer and Gentry are also tied for the points lead in the Hedman Husler of the Year Award standings at 58 points, while Turner is a close third with 56 points. At each NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring event, a driver earns a Hedman Husler point for each position they improve from the start of the race to the end of the race.

Hedman Husler Hedders, the Official Hedder of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, will award the driver with the most Hedman Husler points at the end of the season with a $1,000 bonus as the Hedman Husler of the Year Award winner.

On-track activities for the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals begin on Thursday night, November 3 with a practice session. On Friday night, November 4 the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Tour will compete in Qualifying and Heat Races to set the front of the 24-car starting field for the $3,000-to-win main event on Saturday night, November 5.

There will also be preliminary B-main races held on Saturday night, November 5 to fill the back half of the field for the $3,000-to-win 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals, Round 14 of the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series season.
