CARTERSVILLE, GA – Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL and Mark Tice of Avon, MS are the front runners for the $5,000 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Tour. They will square off this Friday and Saturday night at $3,000-to-win 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS.

Going into the Gumbo Nationals, 84 points separate Edge and Tice for the point lead in the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year point standings. Edge is fourth overall in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring points, and Tice is seventh.

The ¼-mile high-banked gumbo clay oval of Greenville Speedway is “home turf” for Tice, who is looking to gain some ground on Edge for the $5,000 top rookie prize. While Tice has finished ahead of Edge in the last two series events at Greenville Speedway on October 7 and October 8, Edge has kept his challenger in his sight.

On October 7, Tice came within a car-length of ringing up his first career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win, as he was involved in a three-wide run to the checkered flag with Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS and Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA.

Tice got a big run on the outside groove on the last turn on the last lap of the 40-lap event. Stokes took the win with Turner finishing second, one-half car-length behind Stokes, and Tice was third, one-half car-length behind Turner. It was the best finish of the season for Tice, but he was only able to gain two points on Edge, who finished fourth.

Tice came back on October 8 to finish eighth, and Edge finished tenth. Tice gained another four points on Edge and gained a total of six after two night s of racing on his home track. In 13 starts this season, Edge has 954 points with five top five finishes, eight top ten finishes and one fast time award. Tice has 870 points with one top five finish and three top ten finishes in 13 starts.

Also competing for the 2011 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award are NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Top 10 drivers Frank Wilson of Harold, FL and Tootie Arnold of Bude, MS, who are eighth and ninth respectively in the Touring point standings, and both drivers have participated in all 13 races held so far this season.

NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series co-point leaders Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC and two-time series champion David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN have each won Touring races this season at Greenville Speedway. They will be looking to see who leads the points chase for the $20,000 title going into the final three races of the season after the Gumbo Nationals.

Other NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Top10 Touring drivers expected for the Gumbo Nationals include Turner, who is third and looking for his third Greenville Speedway win in as many years, fifth-place Shannon Lee of Lee of Lumberton, MS and sixth-place Steve Cooke of Mt. Airy, NC.

Stokes will be looking to close in on a Top 10 points fund-paying spot with his second Greenville Speedway win of the season in the Gumbo Nationals. Top local entrants from the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series will be led by the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet WRS West Region Championship Runner-Up Duke Palasini of Leland, MS along with Bobby Jordan of McCarley, MS, and Bubba Harrison of Cleveland, MS.

Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL will be looking for his third straight fast time award in NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring competition at Greenville Speedway. Shaw finished second to Gentry at Greenville Speedway on October 8.

On-track activities for the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals begin on Thursday night with a practice session. On Friday night, November 4 the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Tour will compete in Qualifying and Heat Races to set the front of the 24-car starting field for the $3,000-to-win main event on Saturday night.

There will also be preliminary B-main races held on Saturday night to fill the back half of the field for the $3,000-to-win 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals, Round 14 of the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series season.
