CARTERSVILLE, GA – One of the premier events of season, the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS this Friday and Saturday night, will be the pivotal race of the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series season. It’s the perfect stage for the $20,000 Championship battle, as the main combatants have winning ties to the track.

Trying to pick a favorite to win the $3,000-to-win 50 lap 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals is a large task, so get out a big sheet of paper and sharpen your pencil because there is a plethora of drivers that have had past success at Greenville Speedway with wins and top five finishes.

Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC and David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN are tied for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point lead at 1,160 points. Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA is third with 1,054 points and trying to stay in the title hunt with four races remaining in the 2011 season.

All three drivers have tasted victory in NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series competition at Greenville Speedway and all three drivers need another win this weekend in the $3,000-to-win 50-lap main event on the fast ¼-mile high-banked gumbo clay oval.

One thing is certain, either Breuer or Gentry will leave Greenville Speedway with the point lead, and the momentum going into the last three races of the 2011 season on November 19 at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS, on November 20 at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS and on December 1-3 at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL.

Greenville Speedway was the site of the first of two wins this season for Breuer on April 9. Gentry picked up his first win of the season on October 8 at Greenville Speedway, a victory that tied him with Breuer for the point lead. Turner has two NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series career wins, both coming at Greenville Speedway, one in 2009 and the second in 2010.

In addition to the lead trio in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings, there are several other drivers in the Top 10 of the points chase looking for their own success at Greenville Speedway this Friday night and Saturday night in the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals.

Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL leads the $5,000 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year point standings and his fourth overall in the series point standings. Edge has an 84-point lead over Mark Tice of Avon, MS. Tice, who is also seventh in the overall NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings, almost picked up his first series career win at his home track Greenville Speedway on October 7.

Tice was part of a three-wide blanket finish that Greenville Speedway has become known for on October 7. Tice missed the win by a car-length at the checkered flag behind Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS and Turner. Despite having his best finish of the season, Tice could not cut a big chunk out of Edge’s advantage, as Edge finished fourth in the race.

Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS and Steve Cooke of Mt. Airy, NC have swapped the fifth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings three times this season. Greenville Speedway has also been good to Lee, as he is coming off his best finish of the season, a third-place showing on October 8, a finish that put him back in front of Cooke by 24 points.

Frank Wilson of Harold, FL, Tootie Arnold of Bude, MS, and Mark Rosner of Maryville, TN round out the top ten respectively in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings, but a new challenger is emerging to challenge for one of the ten points-fund paying spots.

Stokes had two good runs in the last two NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS races at Greenville Speedway on October 7 and October 8. In addition to the win on October 7, “Dr. Dirt” finished fourth on October 8 and was the second fastest qualifier for both races. That success vaulted Stokes to the 11th spot of the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS point standings and within striking distance of the top ten.

Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL has found the fast way around Greenville Speedway, as he was the fast qualifier for both NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series events on October 7 and October 8. Shaw finished second to Gentry on October 8.

Then there’s the strong local contingent of NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series drivers at Greenville Speedway who will be looking to keep the big money at home this weekend in their biggest of the season.

Duke Palasini of Leland, MS is the 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Championship Runner-Up and had 11 wins this season at Greenville Speedway. Bobby Jordan of McCarley, MS finished fifth in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS West Region point standings, and Bubba Harrison of Cleveland, MS finished tenth in the West Region this season.

On-track activities for the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals begin on Thursday night with a practice session from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Friday night, the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Tour will compete in Qualifying and Heat Races to set the front of the 24-car starting field for the $3,000-to-win main event on Saturday night.

On Thursday night, the pit gate opens at 4 p.m. for the practice session. On Friday night, the pit gate opens at 3 p.m. with NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Pre-Race Registration and Technical Inspection from 4 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The Friday night drivers meeting will begin at 7:15 p.m. On Saturday night, the pit gate opens at 3 p.m. with NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS driver check in from 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. The Saturday night drivers meeting will be at 5:45 p.m.
