View Full Version : Stokes Earns The Pole For The NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Gumbo Nationals

GREENVILLE, MS – Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS earned the pole position for the $3,000-to-win 50-lap main event of the 5th Annual Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway. On Friday night, Stokes drove the TJC Mortgage/Maximum Signs and Graphics GRT to fast time honors and then won the first 12-lap Heat Race to take the inside front row starting spot for Saturday night’s main event.

Stokes out-qualified the 33-car field during time trials with a lap around the ¼-mile high-banked gumbo clay oval in 15.740 seconds to earn the pole position for the first 12-lap heat race. Stokes then won the first heat to take the pole for the big show. Stokes will be looking for his second series win this season at Greenville Speedway on Saturday night.

The most spectacular finish of the evening was at the checkered flag for the second 12-lap heat race. Bubba Harrison came from third on the last lap to take the win in the Harrison Racing GRT. Harrison went to the outside and drove around Chase Edge of Lafayette, Al and co-point leader Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC for a three-wide finish. Harrison starts the big show from the outside of the front row.

Duke Palasini of Leland, MS won the third 12-lap heat race in the Palasini Farms Special and will start the Saturday night main event from the inside of the second row. Ashley Newman of Mercer, TN won the fourth 12-lap heat race in the 45 Race Shop GRT to earn the outside second row starting spot for the big show.

The top four finishers in the four heat races transferred into the top 16 starting spots for the main event on Saturday night. Joining Stokes as transferees out of the first heat race were Jake Knight of Georgetown, TN in the Got Dirt, Inc. Trak-Star, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA in the Hedman Husler, and John Polasini of Leland, MS in the Polasini Racing Special.

Second through fourth respectively in the second heat race behind Harrison were Breuer in the AES Racing Special, Edge in the Tower Maintenance/Edge’s Gas Company Special, and two-time Nesmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN in the Eads Farms/Dixon Plumbing Warrior.

Neil Baggett of Shannon, MS in the Montgomery Farms Special, Steve Cooke of Mt. Airy, NC in the AES Racing Special, and Bobby Jordan of McCarley, MS in the Henderson Waste and Recycling Trak-Star finished second through fourth respectively behind Palasini in the third heat race.

The fourth heat race saw Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS in the Custom Spraying GRT finish second, followed by Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS in third, and Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS in the Billy Riels Racing GRT taking fourth behind race winner Newman.

Drivers that finished fifth on back in the four heat races will have another opportunity to transfer to the main event on Saturday night in one of two 15-lap B-Main Races. The top three finishers in each B-Main will fill in the 17th through 22nd starting spots for the $3,000-to-win 50-lap main event.

On Saturday night, the pit gate opens at 3 p.m. with NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series check in from 4 p.m. the 5:45 p.m. The Drivers Meeting is set for 5:45 p.m. For more information about Greenville Speedway, visit the track web site at www.greenvillespeedway.net.
