80's malibu hobbystock springs lf 1000 rf 1200 lr 275 rr 250 with bilstein 1043 and 1044 shocks. The car was great with 205/70/15 tires on it, but late in the year we had a special and could run 10" wide tires so i put on a set of 245/60/15. The car pushed entering and huge mid corner push and loose coming off. The car scaled out roughly 150 lbs heavy on the LF than the RF and 180 lbs of bite. The main difference was the LF being 80lbs heavier than normal with the skinny tires the bite was the same. The wheel offsets were all the same just wider tires LF 2" RF 2" LR 3" RR 4". The track is a half mile very high banked. Would a 3" or 4" offset on the RF help?

I've always heard and been told that more rear stagger will make the car looser on exit, but get you in the corner better ?

Now what i really don't understand is why did the car get so tight just by adding the wider tires? Is it because the wider tires had more overall grip? I could man handle the car in and to the center but when it was time for it to rotate and drive off the corner it was almost a 4 wheel slide... basically whoever is on the outside better look out because here i come. Now with the narrower 205/70 tires the car drove awesome and had good drive off....i really wish i would have left tires alone that night.

I am considering buying some new shocks for this year, what do you guys recommend? Stock mount shocks, i have been looking at the qa1s. Also on swapping the front springs, is that something you would do on a high banked 1/2 mile momentum racetrack?

Thanks Guys

Those front springs are way too stiff, unless that thing is a tank.

never switch the front springs on a high banked track, if yours is very high as you say do not switch them, just free it up in and let her eat.

i like about 100lbs softer on the rf 90% of the time. i run a high banked fast 1/2 mile and thats where it works best. seems like tighter corner track dont like it as much as sweeping tracks. i normally run 900lf 800rf.

What is the best stock mount shock on the market right now? I have been using bilsteins but they are getting some age on them now, I see a lot of guys running the qa1 shocks right now. Also I am thinking about running Bloomfield IA hobbies 1-2 times this year and I always struggle up there, is that a good place to try softening up the front springs?

Thats way over simplified.

If you have zero stagger for example you are going to have to break traction with one tire or the other to make the corner...

So you have to run some stagger no matter what to make your car turn, most guys are not running any or enough, therefore causing their cars to be loose because they only have one rear tire working.

I change 2 shocks rf and lr and add 50# for a dusty dry track and usually add 3-4 psi to the rr tire. The shocks and lead give me more grip the stagger lets me still turn the car.

Do you put the weight right over the rear end and/or to the right or left side of the car ?

I never put ANY right of the centerline. my cars are always set up to set it right over the rearend as close to left rear spring as I can get it. Same bar my wt jacks are on.

What do you use for right side weight ? Do you have your fuel cell moved to the right ?
