we need more info as far as car type, size of motor and type, what division you run, type tire type of hp you think your motor has, just need more info and the answers will come in.

Depends on how many rpm"s you want to run, 583 or more

Now we got some information, first off I would say with your motor, decent hp, I would start out with a 630 to a 648-- 7500 to 7800 if less r use less gear, on a 406 I would start with a 620 and work up or down with that. 420-430 588 to 600 to 610 depends on condition of track . this is the type of gearing I have used in the past with these type motors on a good banked 1/4 mile track

I would look at your engine torque curve with the cam you are using. It won't do you any good if you turn more rpms then your cam is good for, as it won't pull all the way up the straights. I run a 583 gear on a 1/4 banked track and only run 6800-7200 rpm, my racing buddies say my motor sounds like a Massey Ferguson tractor motor when i rev it up, but there has not been a time when their BIG rpm motors have gotten by me off the corner and up the straights. jmo.

old track champ has got it right, gear it for your rpm range per your cam. When I gave you those starting points it was based on the type cams I have been running over the years. you need to know just how far your motor will pull with out just making noise, if you run out of power before you get to the end of the shoot, to much gear, you want to still be pulling at the end and thats the sweet spot you want good luck, I am sure you will figure it out.
