What grit are you guys using for grinding your tires?

I think I use 35 grit. I'll have to look to be sure but I know it's very course. I tried to use an 80 grit once and it didn't work too good. It took forever to do a tire. I'm pretty sure they are 35 grit. I also use a polisher/buffer that doesn't spin too fast and won't get the tire too hot. Works great. My kids can even help out because it's not too aggressive. Hey John, the buffer is nice isn't it. We were getting the 24 grit from harbor freight, the centers will wear out on the cheaper discs but you can put two on at a time and it stops it from happening. If you buy the more $$ discs they seemed to last much longer.

I have a 35 and a 50 grit, and I couldn't tell you what is on there. Its the same disc going on 2 seasons.

Thanks for the replies. What backing pad are you using with the harbor freight buffer (part #)?

The buffer we used is not sold any more. It was a 7 inch variable speed and it came with a rubber sanding backer pad. Here is the one that replaced it.

My buffer doesn't have the rubber backing pad. Its hard plastic and has a flush type nut that holds whatever disc you are using to the backing.

I have the 7" meat grinder carbide burr version that most speed shops sell.
Last season though I started using a flapper wheel (36 grit?) on a 4.5" grinder and it works pretty good when you're just trying to break the glaze and not create millions of sypes.
