usually your restricted to porting work done to unshroud the valves in the ford 2300 d port heads, but Has anyone ever heard of anyone moving the cylinder head forward on the block to help to unshroud them even more?

Generally speaking, the large majority of valve shrouding takes place @ 50-75% of Net valve lift, and that shrouding is within the head chamber walls. And that % of Net lift is where the flow needs to be optimized for best TQ/HP. Relatively speaking, shrouding at/near peak valve lift hurts much less because the valve spends little time in that area. As Smokey Unick was fond of advising...... " Lift the intake valve to 70% of full Net lift, & modify the chamber/head for best flow @ that point." Another physical point of concern. With the block empty & fully prepped in the cylinder bore area, bolt the head to the block with a decent used head gasket. Then observing from the bottom of the empty cylinder bore, scribe a 'bore line' into the deck of the head. Then remove the head and grind the chamber metal out to the bore line in those areas, except the quench, where the head metal overlaps/hangs into the cylinder bore. And if the overlap is considerable, you can also blend the grind process into a slight 'slope' of the head chamber walls. Totally vertical chamber walls in the head generally are not a good thing when it comes to flow. -Dave-
