Tyler Hershey Racing Experiences Both Ups & Downs During Their 2012 Opening Race Weekend…Welcomes 340 Defense to the Team.

A cold rain moved across the Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday, March 24th delaying the opening race of the 2012 season by six days for Mercersburg, Pennsylvania chauffeur, Tyler Hershey.

With the sun shining this past Friday evening, Hershey Racing unloaded the White/Black/Red #74 in a familiar pit area. Tyler, the 2007 Track Champion was at Williams Grove Speedway to compete with 37 of the area’s top drivers in what would be their only 2012 appearance at the famous Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania, half mile. The night did not go as planned, as Tyler found himself marred in the back of his competitive 10 lap heat race with an ill handling race car. The crew went right to work adjusting the car for the consolation, where Tyler was scheduled to start near the back. When the green flag waved, the Hershey Racing Engines/JWP Environmental, Lazer Chassis was much better as Tyler worked the high side around the big speedway methodically moving towards the front. While passing a slower car for position, contact was made bending the left front suspension, and making the car hard to steer. Tyler wisely brought the car pit side, and called it a night.

A disappointing opening night did not dampen the spirits of the family owned team as Tyler and the crew headed home to repair and maintenance the car. Saturday saw the team head south to Winchester Virginia, for a $2000 to win event at Greg Gunter’s fast 3/8 mile banked speedway. The Hershey Racing “Pill Draw” curse struck again as the team picked a number that would put them 10th in the second of three heats. When the green flag waved, there was no doubt what so ever that the car was much better than the previous night. Tyler made his way towards the front using the low groove, just missing a transfer spot by one position. After easily transferring through the consolation, Tyler found himself rolling off 20th in the nights 30 lap feature. When the green flag waved Tyler, got right up on the wheel and started heading forward, sometimes running three wide around the lightning fast oval. The car got better as the race progressed, and after passing 12 cars Tyler was awarded a fine 8th place finish.

“We were just real bad from the start Friday and it got us behind” said the 21 year old. “Dad, Pap & the Dave’s (Motter & Cousin), got it a lot better for the consolation, we just started to far back. Saturday the car was good all night, that place was fast and those new lights make it a great track to race on. My crew works really hard and I was just as happy for them as I was for myself to be able to bring home a good finish. I am really looking forward to racing back at Hagerstown this week” added Tyler.

The team plans to only race once this coming Easter Weekend, as they will make their 2012 debut at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night.
