Any lighter weight fly wheels suggested for a 2.3L ford engine. Somewhere I heard that people where using ford escort fly wheels?

i don't know of any OEM flywheels that are lighter and fit the 2.3L but I do know that the stock flywheel can be lightened quite a bit with out to much work. The one problem is you need acess to a lathe with a 6 inch swing. I did my own flywheel as I happen to have just such a lathe. I didn't rebalance the flywheel afterwards and have had no issues with vibrations.

Yes you can use an escort flywheel from 1.9l I don't remember exact years but they were from 90s. you will have to use shorter flywheel bolts. escort 1s have worked just fine for me. also a longer throwout bearing. use escort pressure plate with clutch disc for your trans

Make SURE you use the flywheel bolts from the Escort, the stock 2.3 ones are too long, and even though they seem to torques down, you are just torquing against the shoulder.

speedway motors sells a ram steel flywheel for a 2300 that weights 9.5 lbs

The mustang pressure plate & disc will also work with the escort flywheel. The timken 614037 bearing will work w/ 4 spd but will NOT fit the the T5 trans input shaft.

This has been asked many times. See if seach comes up with some threads.
One answer that needs to be said is. DO NOT CUT DOWN A STOCK FLYWHEEL. You're asking for trouble. They are made of cast iron and CAN come apart. If your body parts or life is worthless at least think of those around you. I KNOW, I know, there are those that have done it and are still here to talk about it. I've seen stock ones several come apart and it's not pretty!There is a reason that some associations have out lawed such flywheels. The escort wheel is an inexpensive way as it weighs in at approx 16 1/2 lbs and you can find them in the salvage yards. Speedway was selling a steel similar flywheel for approx $ 100.00
If you're looking for the lightest setup use a ram coupler with a automatic flex plate.

I have come to the realization that people will anyway. I had this conversation a couple of weeks ago and it ended with so and so said it is fine to do that. OK go ahead but dont ask me what I think again go ask so and so he knows everything anyway. Just hope evrything goes down when it breaks and not out the side to hurt the guy that did it the right way.

I've seen a few go in my days and that includes one that was steel, suposedly SFI rated. They quickly sent a replace with complete clutch and a new scattershield.

Use the 2.0 from the 70's.. Its 10.4 lbs bare.. Use the whole 2.0 setup.. 23 spline...Simple... Just have it drilled for the 2.3 crank.. Works great...My Pinto flywheel was 21 lbs. So I lost nearly 11 lbs bolting on a stock part...General rule applies.. Short bolts have to be used!!!
