Another night of temps in the low 40’s but the racing kept the fans warmed up on the second night of race action at Hilltop Speedway. The only thing Dresden’s Devin Moran didn’t do this week was to be fast qualifier but other than that he won his heat and lead all 25 laps aboard the Custom Cutters, Eddie’s Sunoco, and Donnie Moran Driving School #99m for his second win of the season in the Holmes Tire Late Models. It was a little more challenging this week for Moran as the leading all time feature winner at Hilltop, and heat winner, Doug Drown, would start on the pole and the two would go side by side the first couple of laps before Moran would build up a half of straight away lead as last seasons track champ, Steve Prince and fast qualifier George Lee along with Charlie Duncan battled for third. With ten laps to go, Drown’s tires warmed up to the racing surface and began closing in on the race leader as Lee took control of third. As the white flag flew, Drown had closed to two car lengths behind Moran and Duncan slipped past Prince for fourth and at the finish line would cross in that order.
Last week in the Tri State Modifieds Jesse Wisecarver chased Kevin Morehouse but this week the shoe was on the other foot for most of the 20 laps as the Zanesville driver grabbed the point at the drop of the green with Morehouse in pursuit. The Formation Cementing and Ron & Tami Jewett Motorsports #101 of Wisecarver would steadily increase his lead while Morehouse tried to hold off Norm Aronhalt but with five to go, Aronhalt powered past for second. The man that was on the move was 14th starting Rick Auckland as he had moved into fifth at lap 12 when he moved past Vic Hottinger and then edged past Larry Kugel with two circuits to go for 4th. For Wisecarver, it would be his third Modified win at Hilltop as he would be followed across the finish line by Aronhalt, Morehouse, Auckland, and Kugel. Heat winners were Wisecarver, Hottinger, Jimmy Smith, and Morehouse. Robin Duston scored the last chance win.
It looked like it was going to be a good night for car number’s 101 as in the Street Stock main, Kyle (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)inson and his #101 had control of the action for the first 6 laps but mechanical malfuntions forced him to the pits and Shreve’s Justin Patterson inherited the lead. As the rest of the field was beating and banging on each other, Patterson and his Holmes Tire #83 would lead the last nine laps to chalk up his third feature win at Hilltop. Behind him, back and forth action for a top five finish saw Ryan Wisecarver take second with six laps to from Timmy Glassburn as Steve Wolford held off several challenges from different drivers to claim fourth while Bob Chilcote eased past Josh Miller on lap ten to gather in fifth. (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)inson and John Wilson posted the heat wins.
It was like a family reunion for the Mini Stock feature as the top four positions had the name Adkins in it. With a couple of hard crashes and two drivers given the black flag, only seven of the 18 cars that started saw the checkered flag. Jerry and Terry Adkins went back and forth all race long for the lead and when the checkered waved, Jerry Adkins of Millersburg and his TH Mfg #101 was sitting in victory circle, his third ever Hilltop win. Last chance #2 winner Mark Adkins came home third as Brett Adkins was fourth. Brad Hensel took home fifth. Heat winners were Jerry Adkins, Terry Adkins, Jeff Rose and Gary Hensel Jr. with Jeff Barker Jr. topping the first Last Chance win.
Heat winners Rolly Heyder and Jack Large started in the front row of the Bugs R Gone Truck feature with Jack Large taking the point with last season track champ, Kevin Potts, right in his tire tracks. They would stay that way for the first 11 laps of the twelve lap event. Mitch Caskey was running the high side of track to keep up with the leaders but contact with the wall on lap eight cut a tire ending his run for victory. Opening night winner David Potts had started ninth and had worked his way past Gordon Zimmer and Jerry Gardner for third with three laps to go. Up front, coming down to the checkered flag, Kevin Potts put a power slide move on Jack Large out of turn four and beat Large to the line and put the Sunbury based, Eagle Insurance, Welders on Wheels, and Proscape Landscaping #8k in victory circle for his fourth win. Large finished second with David Potts, Zimmer, and Gardner following.
Uhrichsville’s Kyler Kidd went flag to flag for his second Mini Wedge win of the year. Charity Bubeck was running right with Kidd for the first 3 circuits but as they got into lapped traffic, she looped out on the back stretch. Phil Bubeck took over second but could not make a run on Kidd for the win. Hannah Rose nipped Triston Lillibridge at the line for third as Charity Bubeck came back up to capture fifth. Charity and Kyler won the heat races.
Next Saturday, April 14th, all six divisions will be in action with the Modlites joining in. They are motorcycle engine powered, scaled down modified looking cars that will be making their first of four scheduled dates at Hilltop Speedway. Pit gates open at 3 pm with general admission gates swinging open at 4 pm as hotlaps start at 5 pm and the first race at 7 pm.
