Installed a timing belt/bumped the aux shaft. Tried to time the motor and found turning the dist clockwise I ran out of adjustment (hitting a down bar in engine bay) and couldn't retard the timing enough to get it where it should be.

Question is, can I just take the belt off, turn the aux gear counter clockwise a bit to get it back or at least closer in sync?

It would be simpler to pull the distributor out rotate the rotor several teeth counter clockwise, then you should have enough adjustment to get the timing you need. You can loosen the timing belt and change the timing, but you also take the chance of getting the cam out of time. One tooth out of time on the cam could cause major problems.
