AMRA Announces Point Funds
Plans for 2012 Season

MT. ALTO, WV-The American Motor Racing Association (AMRA) has finalized plans for the 2012 season, including the release of the 2012 Road Warrior Challenge that begins Friday, May 4 at Skyline Speedway.
The Road Warrior Schedule--which features an $8,000 point fund-- is now released so that teams can make plans, however, the series cautions that the schedule is just that-TENTATIVE; and that more races will be added at a later date.
"Several tracks want a "Road Warrior" race," said AMRA president Larry Keefer. "But first they want to confirm their own schedules and keep a watch on the economy. We understand and respect that, but at the same time we want our drivers to know that we have much of the legwork done."
Tentative AMRA point funds have also been announced for the upcoming season with at least $26,000 going to the top twenty-five and contingencies to at least the top 35 in the Malta Modifieds. A potential boost in sponsorship hopes to boost the point fund which pays the National Modified winner $5,000. Traditionally, the organization has waited until all point fund commitments have been received.
Keefer added, "Waiting sometimes left racers scrambling to put their schedules together and we wish we could have put this out earlier. Some drivers have already posted schedules on their websites, but we think the AMRA Road Warriors will be attractive additions to team schedules and a welcome chance at garnering a hefty payoff. Yes, the electronic age has certainly changed how a driver does business."
The organization also has developed a bonus points system that will reward drivers and member tracks based on loyalty. One advantage of running AMRA is that tracks know that AMRA drivers chase points.
"We want to help tracks maintain a consistent field of cars," said Scott Wolfe, Director of Racing Operations. "Success is a two-way street, actually a three-way street, in that AMRA, member tracks, and drivers must work together. It only makes sense for a driver to be loyal to a member track, because he can take advantage of both AMRA point money and track point funds. Admittedly, most tracks have come a long way in developing their point funds, but as the economy struggles more work is still at hand."
Drivers will receive 25 bonus points in the AMRA National Series if they race at a track four weeks in a row. "Simply put, four consecutive weeks equals 25 bonus points," said Wolfe. "It doesn't count to run three weeks, skip a week, then come back and run one week. It must be four consecutive, back-to-back weeks. The lone exception would be having a rain-out in the mix."
If, during a five-week period, there was one rain out at the track on week three and a driver was there week one and two, then week four and five, this counts as four consecutive weeks at that track. Also, Road Warrior followers will receive 25 bonus points for racing four consecutive Road Warrior Races. These bonus points will count on the National Points only. In each of the Road Warrior bonus programs and local track bonus programs, bonus points can be accumulated up to 100 points. Drivers can collect only 100 total bonus points; in other words 50 may come from racing locally and 50 from the RWT series.
"We wanted to give both our traveling drivers and our local track drivers a reward," noted Keefer. "To have one without the other, would be detrimental to one faction or the other.”
Another topic of discussion, has been the use of Sponsor Decals. "Sponsors expect to see their decals on the AMRA cars. The racers have a responsibility in this. For the times when that new body panel or door panel gets put on the car we will give you another decal pack," confirmed Wolfe. "Decals in a visually prominent area must be displayed to get inspection points. Ask for an extra decal package at the start of the season, or during the season contact an AMRA official."
"Last year businesses' had hard times financially, racers had it tough, and costs of operating the AMRA escalated. As a result, we drug our feet on releasing our points fund numbers last year," asserted Keefer. "Our point fund was just a little off from previous years, but it was still an excellent point fund of over $45,000 plus contingencies in both divisions collectively. We were also able to reward drivers with certificates that did not finish in the top 35 in the modifieds, and all who came to the banquet were eligible for contingency door prizes regardless of where they finished in points."
"It just wasn't acceptable to release the point fund when we did in 2011," added Keefer. "This year we are announcing a tentative point fund in all of our series, with anticipation that the point fund will increase once additional sponsors are secured. But at this point, the point fund will be what you see in the following portion of this release."
The Road Warriors will run for $8,000 in prize money, the national modified points' series will run for $26,000 plus contingencies, and the AMRA Late Models will run for at least $9,000 in points' money tentatively.
"The AMRA wants to rejuvenate its Road Warrior series," explained Keefer. "We had very good fields last year, but we didn't consistently have the same drivers. I know times are tough, especially getting guys to travel, so the AMRA wanted to give drivers something to shoot for with a pay-off of eight places and the bonus points' incentive. Negotiations are in progress with various sponsors that could make the Road Warrior Challenge the biggest Modified deal going nationwide. But for now we are going with what we've got."
The AMRA is looking to hosting at least one $2,000-to-win Road Warrior event, plus again hosting the Annual Greg Schilling Memorial, a pilgrimage honoring one of the AMRA greats.
