Chilton Has “a Coke and a Smile” in Coca-Cola 40 at Lake Cumberland Speedway

Burnside, KY-April 28, 2012- The third time would be the charm on Saturday evening as Lake Cumberland Speedway would finally get its Coca-Cola 40 in the books on the third try and Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY would lead all 40 laps in getting the win and picking up a $3,000 payday. Don Adams of London, KY would take the $1,000 to win special for the Modified division, while other feature event winners included Goble Bertram of Monticello, KY in Super Dirt Stock/Sportsman and Jeremy Strunk of Bronston, KY would win the Front Wheel Drive feature.

Justin Rattliff and Michael Chilton would bring the Coca-Cola 40 for Super Late Models to the green flag, with Chilton grabbing the race lead as the pair would race side by side off of turn four to complete the first lap. Chilton and Rattliff would be the class of the field until around the midpoint of the race when Todd Coffman would join the fray and begin to pressure Rattliff for second. The duo of Rattliff and Coffman would battle for the runner-up slot, while Victor Lee and Michael Asberry would go at it for the fourth position. The last of four caution flags on lap 27 would tighten the field up one last time, but Chilton would hold off the challenges of Rattliff over the final few laps of the event to take the win in his Central Painting/Chilton’s Lawn Care/Dial Painting/Blue Moon Farms sponsored #97 REVELution Chassis, Mike Bullock Race Engines powered mount. Rattliff would finish second, while Coffman would take third, with Lee and Asberry completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten would be Buzz Williams, Jeff Watson, Tim Taylor, Tommy Bailey, and Jason Barrett. Twenty-two entries would group qualify, with Justin Rattliff earning $100 dollars courtesy of John Mulligan and Sidney Sprague by being the overall top qualifier at 13.986 seconds. Heat wins would fall to Rattliff, Chilton, and Dustin Neat, while Wesley Brummett would win the B-Main.

Don Adams would fend off the mid-race challenges of Ricky Arms and another challenge from Arms on a late race restart to take the win in the Modified main event aboard his Lightning Chassis/NAPA Auto Parts of Hazard sponsored #12 Lightning Chassis, Mullins Race Engines powered machine. Arms would finish second, while Jimmy Payne would claim a third place finish. Fourth and fifth place efforts would be earned by Russ Gabbert and Elliott Despain. The remainder of the top ten would be Chad Scott, Chris Johnson, Mike Petrey, Stacey Decker, and John Smith. Arms would be the top qualifier among 17 entries at 15.339 seconds. Payne and Adams would score the heat race victories.

Goble Bertram would be dominant in the Super Dirt Stock/Sportsman division main event, having a half-track lead at the drop of the checkered flag after 15 laps to take his first win of the season in his unsponsored #1. Trailing the 59 year old veteran at the finish would be Johnny King, Scott Hutchinson, Lindsey Decker, and Sarah Patrick. Seven entries would draw for starting positions and Bertram would also win the heat event.

Jeremy Strunk would make a late race pass of Rusty Light and hold on to score the Front Wheel Drive 10 lap feature event. The 13-year old youngster would drive the Mike Strunk owned D&M Muffler and Tire/Corder Engine Works/Delany Engineering/B.H. Graphix sponsored #15 to the win over Light, Eddie Strunk, Charles Burton, and Stephanie Butler. Seven entries would draw for starting positions and Burton would win the heat event.
