Boyd Speedway Results May 4th
(Ringgold, Georgia) With a full field of cars filling the pits at Boyd Speedway it was Heat Race time. First out would bring the heavy equipment of the B-Hobby division as Ronnie Brooks took Heat #1 and Thomas Gilbert would join him on the front row for the nights 15 lap feature. Crate Late Model saw a couple of past winners take heats as Jeff Smith took the first and Jason Welshan the second. A-Hobby saw a new victory as #99 Scott Gravitt held off a hard charging #57 driven by Caleb Patton and in Heat #2 “Daddy Brooks” finished in front of son Booger Brooks.

It was now qualifying time for 30 Super Late Models signed in for the S.R.R.S. Super Late Models making their first visit of the year to the 1/3 mile clay oval. Under S.R.R.S. rules there would be three groups of qualifying Group 1 fast qualifier would see the familiar R1 of Riley Hickman clicking off the fastest lap. In Group 2 Georgetown’s Skip Arp in the familiar #31 would set fast time in his respected group. As the final group headed to the speedway Chip Brindle would lock in the fast time of Group 3.

As the first feature event rolled to the front stretch as the remaining Supers ready their high horse powered equipment for one of three B-Mains. But first the B-Hobby’s would roll of with #48 Ronnie Brooks bringing the field to the green alongside T19 Thomas Gilbert. Brooks would hold a very brief lead until the familiar #45 of Dallas Brooks would pass him on lap 3. Dallas Brooks set sail for the finish but it appeared that no one wanted to finish second behind him. First Ronnie would spin in turn 2 handing the second place spot to Jimmy Smith only to see him spin in the same spot before a lap could be completed. This would hand the second place position to #15 Boonie Gulett, but then he would slow due to mechanical problems. The event would be finished under a green/yellow with Brooks followed by Scott Boyd, Hunter McKenzie and Jason Reed.

Three Super Late Model B-Mains clicked off quickly to set the field for the 40 lap Feature Event. The Crate Late Models were up next as all 18 competitors rolled to the front stretch for the fans to see. With Jeff Smith leading from the pole position the question would be asked “could anyone break the Welshan Train?” as Welshan would shot for his fourth straight victory. The question was answered quickly as at the drop of the green Welshan set sail never looking back taking his fourth straight victory. Chris Wilson would scoot by Smith for second followed by Smith Craig Burrows and Jerry Coffman. Welshan would bypass his victory lane photos as he and follow Crate drivers Smith and Burrows would hurry back to their trailers for the double duty in Super Late Model Feature Event.

The A-Hobby division brought their equipment to the racing surface as #99 Scott Gravitt and #48 Arva Brooks would slowly bring the field to the green. Arva Brooks would take the early command followed by Gravitt and younger Booger Brooks. Booger Brooks would motor past Gravitt in turn 4 as Gravitt washed up the track opening the door for Brooks. Brooks then set his sights on his dad Arva for the lead. Booger Brooks would take the lead and the victory. Booger Brooks is batting 1.000 as he has taken every feature event of the year so far. Booger Brooks was followed by Arva Brooks, Scott Gravitt, Caleb Patton and Steve Tate.

It was now time to bring the S.R.R.S. SUPERS to the front as all 24 cars would give the fans a 4 wide salute around the 1/3 mile clay oval to the fans delight. With Georgetown’s Skip Arp starting from the outside poll position he would shoot to the early lead, but the R1 Riley Hickman was never far behind. As the two began to catch the back markers Arp showed his years of experience as he sliced through will ease. A lap 31 caution would set the field up for what turned out to be a finish for the ages. As Arp continued to lead Hickman tried high then low only to see the Georgetown veteran slam the door each time. Coming to the white flag Arp held a car length advantage over Hickman, Arp drove it hard into turn one only to wash to the high side, Hickman drove his machine hard to the left desperately trying to scoot by Arp on the bottom. Arp pulled back ahead by a car length down the backstretch. With a half of a lap to go it appeared Riley Hickman would settle for second on this night, but coming off turn 4 Arp washed up the track opening the door to the inside allowing Hickman one last shot. At the checkered flag it would turn out to be one of the closest finishes ever at the famed Boyd Speedway. It would be so close that the finish was determined by the track transponder as Hickman had passed Arp with a 0.004 victory margin. The fans had surely gotten their monies worth on this night. Fans were treated to some of the best racing ever along with 3 lucky fans carrying home a crisp $50 bill thanks to Track Owners Richard and Robert Harvey as the feature winners in A-Hobby, B-Hobby and Crate Late Model winners pulled winning tickets from the General Admission ticket sales. Once again thanks to the great staff of Boyd Speedway as the racing was once again over before 10:15.
