CARTERSVILLE, GA – Smokey Harris Speedway in Haleburg, AL has signed on with the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series for the 2012 season. Drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model Division will now compete for a track point fund and a $20,000 National point fund that will pay back ten spots and award the Champion $10,000.

Track owner Joe Hall said Smokey Harris Speedway will work in conjunction with Albany Motor Speedway in Albany, GA in scheduling NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series events. Albany Motor Speedway runs every other week, and Smokey Harris Speedway will run the Division on the weeks that Albany Motor Speedway is off.

“We are proud to have the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series as a part of our weekly program at Smokey Harris Speedway and offer the late model racers in this area an economical way to race,” Hall said. “We are looking forward to working with the staff and promoters at Albany Motor Speedway, and we will race on opposite Saturday nights from them.”

Hall said the first NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model event at Smokey Harris Speedway will be on Saturday night, May 19, and there will be a guaranteed purse structure for the Division.

“We’re excited to have Smokey Harris Speedway as a part of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Family of Tracks,” NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Director Roby Helm said. “This has created an excellent opportunity for dirt late model competitors at both Smokey Harris Speedway and Albany Motor Speedway to compete for the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series $10,000 Championship.”

Drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series compete against each other using a points system that counts their best 14 week point totals, plus up to 100 bonus points, over the 27-week season. They are competing for a $20,000 point fund that pays back ten spots at the end of the season. The 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Champion will earn a $10,000 top prize.

The dirt late model race cars in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series are powered by the economical Chevrolet Performance Crate Engines that are built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications. There are two engines to choose from, the 400 horsepower aluminum-head 604 engine and the 350 horsepower steel-head 602 engine that gets a 100-pound weight break.

These engines are in stock and ready for free next day delivery anywhere in the Southeast from NeSmith Chevrolet in Claxton, GA. The Chevrolet Performance 604 Crate Engine is on sale for $5,095 and the Chevrolet Performance 602 Crate Engine is on sale for $3,195 at NeSmith Chevrolet in Claxton, GA. According to the Smokey Harris Speedway web site, the site of Smokey Harris Speedway is rich in tradition as an area entertainment center for over 100 years. In 1899, on land originally donated by Colonel Oglethorpe Dukes, the Chattahoochee Valley Social Club began providing this farming community with entertainment and a place to gather.

Featuring a dance hall, swimming hole, picnic area, festival grounds, and a race track, nothing has put Haleburg on the map like the original Chattahoochee Valley Park. As a focal point of the surrounding area, the park hosted the only community swimming hole, called the “Blue Hole”. The pavilion on the grounds hosted band concerts, dances and weddings.

But what brought Chattahoochee Valley Park the greatest notoriety was the race track. This South Alabama legend is known worldwide as the birthplace of mule racing. Over the years, Chattahoochee Valley Speedway has played host to events for just about every competitive contraption devised by man.

In 1967, then owner Arthur L. “Smokey” Harris invited area stock car drivers and enthusiast to the track for the first time. Today, track owner Joe Hall has renamed the clay oval in honor of Smokey Harris and is keeping the rich tradition of entertainment and competition alive.
