BOYD SPEEDWAY RESULTS 5-18-2012
(Ringgold, Georgia) With a few rain showers threatening the racing at Boyd Speedway Mother Nature pushed all the showers north and the fans were set for some fine racing on the 1/3 mile clay oval. With over 85 cars signed in to see who would be the best on this night, the feature line-ups would first need to be set up by the pair of Heats in each division. Heat race winners were in B-Hobby- Chip Henry and Thomas Gilbert. In a pair of Crate Late Model heats #72 Robby Mason would take the first victory followed by Kenny Kizzar and in the second heat Jeff Smith would finish in front of Rex Richey. The A-Hobby field of 20 cars were split into two equal heats of 10 cars each with Arva Brooks taking the first and Scotty Gravitt taking the second. Next up would bring the Steel Headed Late Models to the front stretch with Mike Weeks taking the pole for the night 25 lap feature and would start alongside of Cleveland’s Lamar Scoggins piloting Richard Austin’s #A-19. The evening last heat would see James Dykes win in the Front Wheel Drive.

It was now Feature Time as the B-Hobby Heavyweights rolled into position on the front stretch to compete in their 15 lapper with the winner to take home the top prize of $170. As Hixson’s Chip Henry would lead the field to the green it wouldn’t take long for the cautions to start flying. A major crash in turn 3 on lap 2 that collected the cars driven by Chattanooga’s Taylor Sewell and Soddy Daisy’s Roy Baker it would halt the field under the Red Flag as Sewell’s car erupted into flames. Track Officials quickly moved in to extinguish the flames and help both drivers to safety. Sewell’s car had deposited a large amount of racing fuel onto the racing surface that track officials decided to ignite and let burn off. Once racing got back underway it was a lap 4 caution that slowed the field once again for the stalled racing machine of Ringgold’s Adrian Williams. Due to time limits the race was shortened and at the checkered flag Chip Henry was able to drive the #53 into victory lane as he was followed across the line by Thomas Gilbert, Dallas Brooks, Scott Boyd and BJ Wilson(who was awarded 5th place after being spun out on the final lap by Ronnie Brooks).

It was now time to bring the Crate Late Models to the front stretch as many were trying to fine tune their respected rides for the upcoming Nesmith Crate Late Model Event. As the field rolled off the front the #72 of Hixson’s Robby Mason quickly rolled to a stop in front of the flag stand with an apparent broken steering rack ending his quest before the race had even taken the green. This would now place Kenny Kizzar and Jeff Smith on the front row. The race would be slowed only once as Kenny Kizzar would take his first checkered flag of the New Year followed by Jeff Smith, Jason Welshan, Brian Pritchard and Jerry Coffman. Chatsworth’s Jeff Smith was later awarded the victory when Kizzar refused to tear down under protest.

As the A-Hobby division was being lined up on the front stretch track officials informed the racers they would be giving the fans a treat by forming a 4 wide salute to the local A-Hobby fan base. With Arva Brooks and South Pittsburg’s Scotty Gravitt bringing the field to the green, Brooks would jump to the early lead. Gravitt would quickly drop back to 5th place in just under a lap. Now it was a pair of Brooks leading the way. With the veteran Brooks holding a slim lead of Michael Brooks, a lap 4 caution would tighten the field back up for a single file restart. On the restart Michael Brooks would take the lead only to see the caution fly again on lap 6. Now it was an all Brooks top 3 as Michael would lead Arva and now Booger Brooks. Booger Brooks making his way to the front to attempt to remain undefeated for the year having taken every feature event of the 2012 season. As the cautions continued to fly a lap 11 caution would see the crowd come to their feet as the #148 of Booger Brooks limped around with a right rear flat. A Brook would eventually go onto win with Michael Brooks finishing in front of Arva Brooks, Steve Tate, and Scotty Gravitt (after spinning on lap 11 and battled his way back to 4th. Rounding out the top 5 would be John Clark. Booger Brooks would change his tire and return to finish a strong 6th ending his winning streak.

As the fans settled back for the feature of the Steel-Headed Late Models a pair of veterans in Friendsville’s Mike Weeks and Cleveland’s Lamar Scoggins leading the way to the green. The fans would see the race only slowed once for lap 8 caution for defending division Track Champion Jamie Perry exiting with a right rear flat. Weeks would go on to lead flag to flag to take his first ever Feature Event at Boyd Speedway. He held off a strong challenge from Riley Hickman in the closing laps. Rounding out the top 5 would be Scoggins, Sevierville’s Mack McCarter and “The Chattanooga Flash” Ronnie Johnson.

The night’s final feature in Front Wheel Drive saw James Dykes take the victory over Adam Reseigh and Richard Hickman. Great night of racing in all division and fans thanked track Promoter Gar (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son for a masterfully prepared racing surface. Racing was once again completed before the scheduled 11 pm curfew.
