View Full Version : Salute To The Armed Forces Weekend Up Next For NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS

CARTERSVILLE, GA – The Salute To The Armed Forces triple-header Memorial Day Weekend is next up for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division with three 40-lap $2,000-to-win races in three days at three different tracks. Over 40 drivers from eight different states are expected to battle in Rounds 8, 9, and 10 of the 2012 season.

The action begins on Friday night at Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS with the $2,000-to-win Salute To The Army 40. Hattiesburg Motorsports Park will also have a pre-race practice session on Thursday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS will host the $2,000-to-win Salute To The Navy 40 on Saturday night, and Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS will present the $2,000-to-win Salute To The Air Force 40 on Sunday night.

Along with the cars and stars of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, the Southern All-Stars Super Late Models will also be a part of the action on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park and on Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Race fans will have the rare opportunity to see complete shows from both series at both tracks featuring over 80 race teams.

The battle for the $20,000 NeSmith Cup is wide open with Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA leading the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division standings with 596 points and a 20-point lead over two-time NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Champion David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN, who has one win in the first seven events of the 2012 season.

The 2011 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL is tied for third in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series points chase with the current VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year point leader Chris Cantrell of Chester, SC with 550 points apiece. Edge is fresh off his first series career win on May 5 Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, TN, and Cantrell has a series quick time award at Whynot Motorsports Park from last season.

Mississippi favorite Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS is sixth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings with 532 points, and “Dr. Dirt” has a series career win at Magnolia Motor Speedway.

Anthony White of Clinton, TN is sixth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series standings with 514 points and leads the Hedman Husler Hard Charger point standings. The 2010 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Larry Harrod of Plains, GA is seventh in the standings with 484 points, and he also has a series career win on his resume from Whynot Motorsports Park.

Other top NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series regulars expected compete in the Salute To The Armed Forces triple-header this weekend include Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS, Jake Teague of Oliver Springs, TN, Mark Tice of Avon, MS, Ronnie Cooper of McKenzie, TN, Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS, Justin Summers of Greenback, TN, Frank Wilson of Harold, FL, Cody Kierre of Beebe, AR.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division regulars always face some tough competition from the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series drivers at all three tracks, which make up the majority of the Top 10 drivers in the WRS point standings.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series contingent will be led by the current point leader Tony Lawson of Laurel, MS, along with Top 10 drivers Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS, Daniel Bridgeman of Meridian, MS, Mickey Trosclair of Luling, LA, Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS and Chase Washington of Houlka, MS.

Also expected this weekend are two-time and 2011 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS, Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL, Rodney Wing of Meridian, MS, Justin McRee of Cottondale, AL, Randy Boyd of Marion, MS, Tim Dees of Meridian, MS, Evan Ellis of Plantersville, MS, and Jamey Boland of Cuba, AL.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will present Qualifying, B-Main Races, and a 40-lap $2,000-to-win Main Event each night. All eligible drivers participating in the Salute To The Armed Forces events will receive 25 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Bonus Points for each race they compete in that will be added to their best 14-week totals.

The Bilstein Shocks “Series Within A Series” will also begin on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park, as eight drivers known as the “Bilstein Bandits” will begin racing for an additional $5,000 point fund by exclusively using the new $135 Bilstein Spec Shocks on each corner of their race cars.

The Bilstein Bandits for 2012 are Matthew Turner, David Earl Gentry, Johnny Stokes, Anthony White, Michael Blount, Mark Tice, Justin Summers, and Frank Wilson. The Bilstein Shocks “Series Within A Series” point fund will pay $2,500 to the top point driver in the program and pay back an additional four spots.

On Friday at Hattiesburg Motorsports Park, the pit gate will be open all day and the grandstand gate opens at 5 p.m. NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Pre-Race Registration and Technical Inspection will be from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Drivers Meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow.
