Dillon Wood holds off Ivedent Lloyd for $3,000 payday during Championships at Tri-County

By Chris Tilley

BRASSTOWN, NC (May 28, 2012)—Dillon Wood of Daytona Beach, FL held off several challenges from eventual runner-up and a two-time Southern All Stars Series Champion Ivedent Lloyd of Ocala, FL to claim the $3,000 payday at Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC on Monday Night May 28. The Memorial Day Championships were presented by Circuit World.

An all-Florida front-row saw Lloyd and Wood bring the field of 18 to life with Wood taking the high line and the lead early on. Lloyd would settle for a second and the field stayed single-file around the bottom early. The first yellow would wave on lap two as George Mashburn and Shawn Chastain both got crossed up in turn two. The next yellow would be lap 6 as David Payne slowed, then on the restart Shawn Chastain slowed in turn two. On lap nine, yellow would wave for Mashburn again as debris fell from his mount. Then on the 14th circuit Jason Payne slowed in turn three, exited to pits ending his night. The lap 18 yellow flag would wave for Danny Ledford who came to a stop in turn three. The lap 20 yellow was for Craig Burrows who slowed on the back-chute and the seventh and final yellow would wave as Mashburn slowed in turn one.

By the 15th lap Lloyd would begin to use multiple lines trying to get underneath and to the high side around Wood, and by the 10 to go point the two would go side-by-side and do this for the next few laps before a lapped car of Bruce Taylor got in between the duo ending Lloyd’s chances of getting around a very quick Wood. Another battle was for the third, fourth and fifth spot between Jamie Oliver, Tony Knowles and Tyler Millwood who swapped spots several times before Oliver held on to the third spot for good with three laps remaining.

Wood led the entire distance to claim victory while driving the GW Performance, Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Racing Shocks and Bearden Oil Company sponsored Clements powered Rocket Chassis. Wood became the fourth different winner of the season in the Super Late Models at Tri-County behind Shane Clanton (April 6); Johnny Chastain (April 20 and May 4) and Jacob Grizzle (May 18).

The Ray Cook-promoted track drew 18 Super Late Models representing five states (NC, SC, GA, FL and TN). Qualifying set the field for the 40-lapper. Fast Qualifier David Payne, who blistered the speedway with a 13:156 second lap had to give up his pole position because of engine woes, and started at the rear of the field in a back-up car.

GREAT show and congrats to both Dillon Woods and Ivedent lloyd for a heckofa side by side battle. Been to Cleveland and N Georgia both this year but the best most consistant shows in the Tri State area are being held at Tri County. And i really like both of those places.Track has been racey and fast all year. Kinda reminds of a smaller version of Rome with the fast speeds and door to door racing.
