Lake Cumberland Classic Fast Facts

-The Lake Cumberland Classic first appeared on the track’s schedule in 1986 and the “Blue Eyed Wonder” from Clarksville, TN, Jeff Purvis, would put his name in the history books as the initial winner of the Lake Cumberland Classic.

-The 1987 edition of the Lake Cumberland Classic would see the driver that would become known as the “Dirt Track Dominator”, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, would score the first of three wins in this event.

-The 1988 Lake Cumberland Classic would produce a third different winner as the “Black Jack” from Grayson, KY, Jack Boggs, would score the event victory.

-The fourth edition of the Lake Cumberland Classic would see yet another new winner as Brian Asbury of Mitchell, IN would become the first driver from the Hoosier state to lay claim to the event win.

-The fifth annual Lake Cumberland Classic would produce the first repeat winner of the event as Jack Boggs would roll back into the Pulaski County semi-banked clay oval and score the win.

-The 1991 and 1992 versions of the Lake Cumberland Classic would produce a second repeat winner and the first back-to-back winner of the race as Scott Bloomquist would grab the cash and take it back to the Volunteer state.

-The Lake Cumberland Classic would not be contested from 1993 through 1997.

-The 1998 racing season would see former racer Harold Hardgrove take over the promotional reigns of Lake Cumberland Speedway and the Lake Cumberland Classic would make a return, with Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY taking the race win, followed by Don O’Neal, Timmy Yeager, Mike Hawley, and Delane Browning.

-Beginning in 1999, Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN would start to make the Lake Cumberland Classic his own personal playground as he would win the race that year over Jim Curry, Darrell Lanigan, Steve Barnett, and Kevin Weaver

-The year 2000 would bring in the 21st century, but the outcome of the Lake Cumberland Classic would be the same as Don O’Neal would become the third repeat winner of the race and the second racer to win back-to-back events. Steve Barnett, Timmy Yeager, Ernie Barrow, and David Marlar would trail O’Neal to the checkered flag.

-Don O’Neal would become the first racer to win three Lake Cumberland Classic events when he scored his third straight win in the 2001 edition of the race. O’Neal would win the 2001 event over Steve Hillard, Scott James, Dennis Erb, Jr., and Jesse Lay.

-Jim Curry of Norman, IN would take the victory in the 2002 Lake Cumberland Classic race by outrunning the likes of Steve Hillard, Rick Corbin, Steve Cornelius, and Brad Barrow to the checkered flag.

-The 2003 edition of the Lake Cumberland Classic would see the return of “The Real Deal” as Don O’Neal would become the first four-time champion of the event. Jesse Lay, Mike Hawley, Bobby Wolter, Jr., and Tim Taylor would chase O’Neal to the checkered flag.

-Rod Carter, Jr., of Woodbine, KY would score his biggest career win at the time by outdistancing the field to win the 2004 edition of the Lake Cumberland Classic.

-The 2005 Lake Cumberland Classic would produce yet another new winner as Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY would score what was his biggest win of his young career at the time by grabbing the race victory.

-In 2006, Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN would win the first of his three victories in the Lake Cumberland Classic to date and become at that time the tenth different winner of the race.

-The 2007 season would see a twist to the Lake Cumberland Classic be added as a pair of events would make up the race weekend, with both events being known as the Lake Cumberland Classic. Night one of the doubleheader weekend would see Rod Carter, Jr. score his second win in the event over Larry Gray, Rusty Schlenk, Scotty Earl and Steve Smith. Night two would see Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN scored his first Lake Cumberland Classic event victory by winning this race over Tommy Bailey, Victor Lee, Tyrel Todd, and Rusty Schlenk.

-The 2008 Lake Cumberland Classic would have the same format as the previous season with twin events contested. Greg Johnson would take his second event win on night one of the weekend over Dustin Linville, Don O’Neal, Mike Marlar, and Michael Chilton. Don O’Neal would claim the win on the second night of the weekend race and his fifth event win by beating Mike Marlar, Greg Johnson, Tommy Bailey, and Dustin Linville to the checkered flag.

-For 2009, the Lake Cumberland Classic would return to a one-race type format and young upstart Super Late Model racer Skylar Marlar of Winfield, TN would score the event win. Skylar would join older brother Mike as the only brother duo to have won the Lake Cumberland Classic race.

-Greg Johnson would lay claim to his third Lake Cumberland Classic victory by winning the 2010 edition of the race over Aaron Ridley, Skylar Marlar, Mike Weeks, and Michael Chilton.

-The 2011 Lake Cumberland Classic would pick up sponsorship from MAC Metals and pay $10,000 to the winner and be a 100 lap event. Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY would get back race leader Don O’Neal with around 20 laps remaining and hold off O’Neal for his biggest career win to date. O’Neal would chase Neat across the finish line to claim second, while Victor Lee, Justin Rattliff, and Jason Jameson would complete the top five.

The Super Late Model payoff for the 22nd Annual MAC Metal Sales Lake Cumberland Classic will be as follows (75 laps): 1st- $10,000, 2nd- $5,000, 3rd- $2,500, 4th- $1,250, 5th- $1,000, 6th- $900, 7th- $800, 8th- $775, 9th- $750, 10th- $700, 11th- $675, 12th- $650, 13th- $600, 14th- $550, 15th- $525, 16th- $515, 17th through 22nd- $500 to start. There will be a $100 entry fee for Super Late Models and the use of RACEceivers will mandatory at this event.

The Open Wheel Modified payoff for this event will be as follows (30 laps): 1st- $1,200, 2nd- $500, 3rd- $350, 4th- $250, 5th- $200, 6th- $175, 7th- $150, 8th- $125, 9th- $115, 10th through 18th- $100 to start. There will be a $30 entry fee for the Open Wheel Modifieds and RACEceivers will be mandatory for this event, while the Super Dirt Stock/Sportsman and Front Wheel Drive divisions will have no entry fee.
