View Full Version : Southern 100 at Southern Ohio Speedway June 15th, up to $12,000 to win Late Models!

WHEELERSBURG, OH-It is here, the most anticipated race of the 2012 season at the Southern Ohio Speedway, the “17th Annual Pepsi Southern 100.” Late Model drivers will race for over $46,000 worth of purse money with up to $12,000 to win, $200 guaranteed to the top 40 drivers, and $720 guaranteed to the top 20 drivers. The 2012 Pepsi Southern 100 champion will receive a minimum of $10,220. On the racing card for the Late Model division will be two 25 lap, $2,000 to win qualifying features and a 50 lap, $10,000 to win championship feature. The Jordan Heating & Cooling UMP Modifieds will also be competing for $1,000 to win and the Vintage American Race Cars will also be in the house.

Southern 100 History
The Southern 100 was at one time one of the biggest Dirt Late Model races on the east coast. Many of the sports greatest drivers have competed in this race with the races past winners list including many National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame drivers. The first Southern 100 was held in 1976 with Billy Teegarden taking the win. The race was ran every year through 1985 before returning beginning in 1990. The last Southern 100 was held in 1998 and saw Grayson, Kentucky’s Jackie Boggs take his second Southern 100 crown.

2012 Pepsi Southern 100 Format Explained
The 2012 running of the Pepsi Southern 100 will feature a new, exciting format for the event. This format was implemented to provide a more exciting show for the fans and give more drivers the opportunity to make more money.

-Following hot laps will be the Phyllis Sansom Memorial Time Trials which will feature 1 lap time trials for the Late Model competitors. The fast qualifier will be awarded with $200.
-The top four will be inverted in each heat race, meaning the fast qualifier will start fourth in heat race number one. There will be four, ten lap heat races. Heat races one and three will determine the lineup for the first 25 lap qualifying feature while heat races two and four will determine the lineup for the second 25 lap qualifying feature. The qualifying features will start heads up based on heat race finishes.
-If there are over 40 cars, B-Mains will be ran to set the remaining positions for the qualifying features. In that case, the top 8 in each heat race will transfer into one of the qualifying features.
-Both 25 lap qualifying features will feature two seperate 20 car fields, meaning that 40 cars will get ro run in a feature and earn at least $200! Each qualifying feature will pay $2,000 to win and $200 to start. Drivers will be allowed to pit to change tires in the qualifying features as well as the championship feature.
-The top 10 finishers in each qualifying feature will transfer into the 50 lap, $10,000 to win championship feature. The first qualifying feature will determine the inside rows of the championship feature while the second qualifying feature will determine the outside rows for the championship feature. The championship feature will start heads up based on the finishes of the qualifying features. The winner of the championship feature will be the 2012 Pepsi Southern 100 champion.

Return of the Famed Southern Trophy to SOS
In addition to a minimum of $10,220 of prize money on the line, the winner of the 2012 Pepsi Southern 100 will also be presented with the presitigious Famed Southern Trophy from former SOS promoter Mike Jewell. The trophy is an impressive 7 feet, 10 inches tall and is one of the most prestigious trophies a driver can win. Some of the sports biggest names have won the Famed Southern Trophy. Jerry Rice is the defending winner of the trophy.

17th Annual Pepsi Southern 100 Preview
One thing is for certain, race fans will get their money’s worth on Friday. First, the heat races will produce some spectacular action as drivers will race hard to gain a premium starting spot in their 25 lap qualifying feature. The 25 lap qualifying features will produce some incredible racing as drivers race for starting positions in the 50 lap championship feature and a $2,000 top prize. There will be two races within a race as drivers race for the important top 10 finishing position to get into the championship feature plus the win to earn the $2,000 and a front row starting position for the championship feature. The 50 lap championship feature will be incredible in itself as drivers race for a $10,000 top prize and a Southern 100 championship.

There are several drivers to watch heading into Friday as strong contenders to win the 2012 Pepsi Southern 100. One of those strong contenders is the SOS Late Model points leader Eddie Carrier Jr. Carrier has three feature wins at SOS this season, including the $6,000 to win Southern 50 back on April 27th. Carrier also carries momentum into Friday after finishing seventh in the Dream 100 at Eldora Speedway.

Another strong contender will be Grayson, Kentucky’s Jackie Boggs. Boggs has won the past two Late Model features at SOS and is the defending Southern 100 champion. Boggs also won the 2011 Southern 50 which paid $10,000 to win. Another Grayson, Kentucky driver, Josh McGuire will be a strong contender. McGuire has one feature win on the season as well as two second place finishes, including a second in the Southern 50 in April.

The Conley Motorsports teams will also be strong contenders. Both Delmas Conley and Rod Conley are former Southern 100 champions while last years track champion R. J. Conley is looking for his first Southern 100 title. The race is expected to draw a large car count with many, many other drivers that will be strong contenders to win.

Jordan Heating & Cooling UMP Modified Preview
Friday will also be a big night for the Jordan Heating & Cooling UMP Modifieds. UMP Modified drivers will be competing for a big $1,000 top prize. The last two Jordan Heating & Cooling UMP Modified special’s saw Hanover, Indiana’s Joey Kramer take the $1,000 prize back on April 27th and Peebles, Ohio’s Dave Jamison take the $800 prize back on May 18th. Jeremy Rayburn, a four time feature winner this season, will also be a strong contender to take the feature win.

Vintage American Race Car Preview
The Vintage American Race Cars will also be on hand at SOS on Friday. Vintage American Race Cars feature restored stock cars and sprint cars that were prominant at tracks years ago. For a track with as much history as SOS, it will be really cool seeing the Vintange American Race Cars taking the high banks.

Late Model Tech Bulletin
Tire samples will be taken in the Late Model division to check for chemical alterations (tire softeners). NO TIRE SOFTENERS ALLOWED!

Times and Admission Prices
Gates will open on Friday at 4:00 pm with hot laps starting the nights action at 7:30 pm. General admission is $25 for ages 17 and up, $20 for teens ages 13-16, $10 for ages 7-12, and FREE for kids ages 6 and under. Pit passes are $40 for ages 13 and up, $25 for ages 7-12, and FREE for ages 6 and under.

It's gonna be fun on Friday. Two 25 lap, $2,000 to win, $200 to start Late Model qualifying features with two separate 20 car fields (that means 40 cars get to run in a feature and make at least $200!). The top 10 in each of those qualifying features transfer into the 50 lap, $10,000 to win, $500 to start championship feature. Drivers that start the championship feature will earn a minimum of $720! The 2012 Pepsi Southern 100 champion will walk away with no less than $10,220 and can walk away with up to $12,200! The fast qualifier will earn $200 in Phyllis Sansom Memorial time trials!

Been to many dirt tracks in my life with dust problems but I was in attendance at Southern and it was terrible you couldnt even see the cars on the track.When leaving the track had to get the old snow scraper out of the trunk and clear the windshield SAD. Water would help but not just on friday.
